Sure, I've been through this whole werewolf rodeo before, but it doesn't get any easier. Before I can wallow in self-pity any longer, I decide to take action. Crouching down, I coil my muscles and then—BOING! I spring up toward the roof of the cave, snatching a wall clock right off the cavern's surface with lightning-fast reflexes. My shoes squeak against the ground as I land, the impact sending a little shockwave through my legs. I pull out my trusty pocket watch, the one that's been with me through thick and thin, a loyal companion since the days when horses ruled the streets and corsets were all the rage.

“My parents are in there. Every time you left me at that altar, you left them there too, wondering what was wrong with their son. I won’t let you do that to them again. You don’t get to be that selfish here.” Her face, already pale, seemed to drain of its last bit of color. She swallowed, a hard, visible motion in her throat. Then, with a carefulness that felt sacred, she reached into her coat pocket. She pulled out the watch. The jagged crack across the crystal was gone. It had been repaired so perfectly it was invisible. The gold-toned hands gleamed under the porch light. The second hand moved with a steady, silent sweep. Tick. Tick. Tick.Time, meticulously restarted.

Just the winding mountain road. Then I saw it. On the dashboard, the digital clock flickered. 11:58 PM. The numbers didn't change to 11:59. They started counting backward. 11:57. 11:56. 11:55. "Kael, look at the clock!" I yelled. Kael looked at the dashboard. "It says midnight, Maya. We’re right on time." He wasn't seeing it. He was part of the rendering. But the violet light under his skin was pulsing faster now, a tiny heartbeat of static beneath his throat.

Murphy backed off quietly, sliding behind the bush quickly, as she pulled the parchments out of her bag quietly, the gleam was a dim one, and the words started to dissolve again. This time the date mentioned was not any older, it was the same one, there was some instruction written on those pages, Tick tock goes the clock, unmuzzled. It was the clock on the nightstand. But it wasn't moving forward. The second hand was twitching. Vibrating. Struggling to move past the second. And then, it stopped. Silence. Elion held his breath. And then, with a loud click, the hand moved. Backward. One second. And then forward again. Elion stared at the clock. "Seven," he whispered. And he knew, with a terrible certainty, that the countdown had begun.

Maybe Trevor Lane or Lucas Grant is simply deploying a stupid prank against my alpha status. My fingers drop the stone back onto the table, and my hand yanks the infusion needle violently out of my flesh, intending to stand up and locate a pack member to interrogate. However, when my eyes look up at the electronic clock mounted on the wall unintentionally, my internal wolf is stunned by what the display shows. The date displayed on the clock face is indeed two winters down the timeline. My mind feels completely helpless. Who is operating behind this stupid prank? Did their logic think an alpha leader would be deceived so easily?

Clarisse smiled and asked me, "Having money feels good, doesn't it? Things that once seemed impossible become so easy to solve." I nodded. Smiling, I drove off. The shadows of the past completely faded. This time, my new life truly began to shine.

Against my objections, he even tattooed our wedding anniversary and my birthdate beneath the scars: "A memento of the scars I got protecting my wife in this lifetime." "Zachary." "Hmm?" "Do you think if I hadn't married you in this life, things would have been different?" Sometimes when I thought about my previous life compared to now, it seemed like a nightmare. Even though I had awakened from it, I couldn't help feeling lingering fear. He held me tight, kissing the top of my head. Isla laughing with Bear. “Not stupid,” I said. “It’s grief. It doesn’t check a schedule. It shows up at 9:17 AM on a Tuesday.” Chloe breathed. Shaky. “So what’s the move,” Chloe said. Alex thought. CREW hat pulled low. “Move is: no 2:47 PM today,” Alex said. “Move is: we do 9:25 AM instead. Right now. All of us. Eyes closed. 11 seconds. For right now. Not for March 14th. Not for December 31st. For right now.”

I stopped to give my mom and kiss and bid farewell for now to a few others. Once we were all ready, Jack and I both handed the clock back to Grace. She touched it, and the time changed to the east coast time zone. “Holy crap! Are you ever gonna tell me how this thing works,” Grace asked, shooting a glare at me. I grinned, absolutely wishing I could throw her down right now and have my way with her.
