Now it's up to me to get us both out of here. I carefully lower Xavier off the boat, making sure his arms stay on top of the life preserve. He weakly holds on, as I begin to pull us to shore. Thankfully the docks here, have built-in stairs along the wall. They're for when the tides lower so that a person can get safely to the boat, without having to jump. Throwing the life preserve away, I grab Xavier's arm over my shoulder and help him to climb up the stairs. After struggling a bit, we manage to reach the safety of the dock a short while later. I lean over and kiss him once more.

Tin garbage cans are thrown around and the truck screeches into her gravel drive before it turns around and putters away. She's allowed a few blissful moments of silence before her alarm clock clicks on, blaring the news: "It's a gorgeous, brisk December morning in Angelica, the temperature at an all-time low like the county hasn't ever seen. Makes me wonder, Diane, if this is all going to catch up to us at some point." Sera sighs loudly, rolling onto her back to face the blank ceiling. "I sense a monster storm coming on. These quiet days are leading up to something, I can feel it."

“I told you before. I’ll repay everything you’ve done to me and then some. You deserve this.” Blood began to seep from her nose, ears, and eyes. She opened her mouth, trying to speak, but no sound came out. From the hatred in her eyes, I could guess what she wanted to say. I took a few steps back to avoid getting blood on me. With blood pouring from all seven orifices, Wendy’s body exploded. She burst apart like a firecracker. A spray of blood splashed across my face, making me look even more terrifying, like a demon risen straight from hell.

Then suddenly, he scooped me up and held me so tightly it felt like I might melt into him. "Yes. Yes, we are," he said in my ear, the laughter he couldn't hide bubbling through his voice. Outside, the city lights stretched out like a glittering galaxy. I used to think my life would just be surviving in this concrete jungle, struggling like a weed and quietly fading away. I never expected that with ten thousand dollars, I could buy a piece of the sea from a dark basement. From then on, my world had tides.

I looked up. Over the distant Ferris wheel—its half‑submerged cars still turning in slow, miserable arcs—new words were burning themselves into the low, misty sky. Not HUD‑clean like the bus announcements; these letters dripped, trailing phosphorescent streaks down through the fog as if they’d been written with neon ink. THE TIDE RISES WITH REGRET. THE MORE YOU LINGER, THE DEEPER YOU SINK. “Cool,” Jax muttered. “Love a metaphor that’s also just… literal murder.”

And I understood, deep within me, that there would be no return. The edge had been reached, and the tide had begun to rise. Tomorrow, we would see who would survive. And who would burn.
