He circled around me carefully, staying just out of reach of my teeth. "Shift," he commanded. I bared my teeth at him. "I said shift." His voice was harder now. Alpha tone. The kind of voice that was supposed to make wolves obey. My wolf wanted to listen. Every instinct in my body wanted to submit and shift and do whatever this man said. But I was not some pack wolf who had been trained to obey since birth. I was a rogue. I had survived twenty years by not submitting to anyone. And if I shifted now, I would be naked. I roared, not delicately, but with a sound of rage and hurt, and my shields burst outward in a violent concussive wave that hurled them off me as though gravity itself had reversed. I rolled to my feet just as something struck my back. Claws sank deep into my shoulder, and I felt flesh tear. The pain was sharp and blinding, but instead of recoiling, I reached for it. I reached for the humiliation still raw in my chest and poured it into my magic. Silver light spider-webbed across the forest floor like lightning seeking roots. The rogue clinging to me convulsed as the surge ripped through him. He fell smoking at my feet.

I could hear the growls of the other rogues and my warriors as they fought, but my interest was in who they were chasing. Jasper fought off another rogue before tackling the one, pinning the person down. He grabbed the rogue by the tail and threw him against the tree. The rogue lunged at him, but Jasper quickly jumped to the right. As the rogue turned around, Jasper moved fast and bit down on his leg before twisting it and removing it from his body.
