Then one of them, a tall, lean man with sunken eyes and a wicked grin, let out a sharp laugh. “Well, well,” he drawled, stepping forward. “Look what we have here, boys.” His gaze dragged over me, his amusement clear. “The great Astrid, the Almega, reduced to nothing but a desperate mother.” A ripple of cruel laughter followed. I clenched my fists at my sides, but said nothing. My silence only seemed to encourage them. Another rogue, this one broader with a scar running down his cheek, smirked. “Didn’t think it’d be this easy,” he mused. “I figured we’d at least get a fight out of her.”

A shiver travelled through my down my back. "That's about the same time the attacks started getting worse," he told me. "Why do you think you're a rogue? Do you even know what they are?" I felt the tears burn the back of my eyes as I knotted my fingers together in my lap. "My old pack told me that the only title I'd ever be worthy of is a rogue." "You're nothing like the rogue werewolves." Hunt sounded so reassuring and when I looked at him, his eyes were warm and kind.

"Ruthless and with no care for their pathetic lives and…" Before Mason could finish, a rough voice cut through the air, interrupting him mid-sentence. "Whereis the rest of the gold we were promised?" the rogue demanded, his voice brimming with aggression. Judging by his imposing stature, he must have been an enforcer, perhaps even a beta. Greasy hair framed his face, accentuating a scar that ran from his hairline, across his eye, and down to his lips. His unfocused gaze hinted at a lifetime spent as a rogue.

Lewis barked at the poor man. I was grateful that my pack members had my back, but from the way the man seemed to crumble from the force behind his voice, I began to feel sympathetic. "Thank you, Lewis, but you should have been a bit gentler; it wasn't exactly his fault." I reprimanded him through the mind link. "Yes alpha." I was going to wave it aside, but I could swear I saw the hint of teeth coming out in a crooked smile. His teeth had been stained brown from the constant use of coffee; the smile was creepy, and it got to me in a way it should have.

If I wasn’t so thirsty, I would have spit it back in his smug little face while he grinned like a Cheshire cat. He was on the shorter side, wide but bulky. Sweat beat down the front and back of shirt, probably already deep into morning chores as dirt caked his boots and tips of his fingernails. He was almost cheery, with a bright, devious smile lighting up his face, ready for whatever smart-ass remark I had for him.

“A lot happened… I didn’t mean to just vanish. But right now, I’m looking for someone. A man named Mr. Ruz.” Grace’s eyes widened immediately. “What? Mr. Ruz?” She stepped closer, lowering her voice. “Alice, are you out of your mind? That man is dangerous. What do you want with him?” My heart pounded. “You know him?” Grace gave a humorless laugh. “Everyone in this circle knows Mr. Ruz. He’s a rogue after being thrown out of his pack. He's one of the most ruthless there is. He deals in illegal trades, weapons, trafficking… anything dark, he’s behind it.”

He grinned darkly. "That changes tonight!"

I rose to my feet. So these Rogues had come attacking my Pack because of the merger alliance? Well, they better brace themselves because they just angered a War General. I looked back at the scrote. He inhaled deeply while his skin tried to push away its pinkness. I smiled. Satisfied. “Now, what is your name?” “My name is Grus.” He said immediately, still trying to catch his breath. Now that’s a good boy. “Hi, I’m Alpha Cayden Hunter and we’ll be good friends.”

It’s the kind of smile that comes right before something explodes — or someone disappears. “You think I buried him?” His voice is quiet and crooning while he pulls a crooked, lopsided grin — one that doesn’t reach his eyes, all menace and mockery. It’s the kind of smile that suggests he might have buried worse. The yellowish light flickers above, throwing shadows over the sharp lines of his face. The scar above his brow twitches.
