"Say hi to your father, baby. He's finally back home to us." The sarcasm dripped so thickly from every single word that I was mildly impressed with myself for keeping a straight face through the entire performance. I watched his expression carefully, and there it was, the faintest tightening at the corner of his jaw, he looked annoyed. I sat down back to continue adjusting my look, a small, triumphant smile playing on my lips. I was practically humming to myself, savoring the taste of my own victory.

He asked, a maniacal grin on his face. I didn’t bother holding back my own grin. “Well it’s about damn time, isn’t it?”

Fang's voice dripped with sarcasm. I grinned. “Oh yeah.” Standing up, I rolled my shoulders. “Looks like I’m going to meet daddy dearest.” And when it was over, I wanted to know why everyone was so entertained by their phones.

I mutter back, and he slides me a malicious glance that tells me he understood the sarcasm in my tone just fine. “Good,” he returns. “Keep your head up. Smile. Make us proud.” Yes, father. That would be much better than seeing my face every other day, wouldn’t it? Just then, the accordion strikes a melodramatic note that leaves me in further turmoil, ascending into a sad melody. I watch from the corner of my eyes, in horror and repulsion, and rage, as my father plasters a bashful grin on his face, sticking out his arm invitingly.

Whole. Then — like I’m possessed — I look back down. And that’s when it happens. Over Mike’s head, Damion grins. Just … grins. Good Lord. It’s slow and wide and completely devastating. Laughing eyes, crooked mouth, zero effort. How can a grin — from that distance — turn my spine into jelly?

I wasn't exactly expecting it. He grinned, and a dimple winked at the right corner of his mouth. Oh lordy! "Just trying to get into the spirit of things." "Well, ummm, thank you. Again."

His voice, low and husky. Yeah. Like I can stop myself from melting. He turned me around and moved us through the crowd, his eyes holding mine, a half-cocked grin played on his lips behind the mask. I looked back at my untouched plate of risotto and meat balls catching Gracelyn's wink. A full blown cheshire cat grin dancing on her lips. She was going to eat my ears off once the day was over.

A burning cigarette settled between his fingers and he blew out the smoke from the cigarette, slowly and deliberately. His lips curled into a smile and his lips pressed into a thin smile. Evil. “I will be here, Sunshine…” Laughs in sarcasm. “When you Mr right become the only wrong that will ever exist.”

“You two are insufferable. Just… just ride in silence.” “Silence is overrated,” Corvin said cheerfully. “And you, my dear gloomy leader, are far too entertaining for it anyway.” Edric shook his head, but there was a twinkle of amusement in his eye. “I can hear them from here. You’re smiling, Alaric. Admit it.” Alaric pinched the bridge of his nose. “Fine. Maybe I’m smiling. But it is a strategic smile. To disarm enemies, to appear approachable, to—”

“That’s my question.” The man scoffed, trying to shake off Cardan’s grip and failing. “I was just trying to grab a chic, so why don’t you fuck off?” A slow, dark laugh rumbled out of Cardan’s chest, and the sound sent shivers straight down my spine. It wasn’t amusement. I had stsyed with hhim for a while to be able to differentiate what he intended when he laughed, adn to notice that he laughed more often when he was displeased or angry.
