Rosalie hesitated, then laughed. "I suppose I did." She headed off toward the palace without another word.
"She lasted less than five minutes," Pearl said, watching her go.
"New record," Evren said, chuckling.
Neither of them noticed Raven, standing alone beneath the old oak. Her eyes followed Rosalie until the palace swallowed her, then lifted to the night sky — and for a moment, the strange silver light returned to them. This time the whispers came through clear enough to understand.
