I run. It’s just who I am. Whenever things get tough, I bail. Every new situation I find myself in, I have an exit strategy. Because I know what could happen if I don’t. Things are about to get bad, and I don’t understand how or why. I’m in a new place, with no pre-existing connections. I’ve developed a life for myself where no one could suspect a thing out of the ordinary. I fit in - or at least try to. But here I am, ready to run.

I’m thrown back to the night that we met. Mate, he growled and heat hits like a bucket of scalding water. Washing over me like a wave. I open my mouth. I’m lost for words as I turn and do the only thing I can. I run. I retreat back through the cabin, realising too late that there’s no exit. I’m not going to crawl through a window. Raymond struggled, twisting his body hard. He stomped on the man's foot. The grip loosened. Raymond spun and punched him across the face. Pain shot through Raymond's ribs. The first attacker was back, landing a hard punch. Raymond gasped, staggering backward.

I can’t see his expression but for some reason, he hasn’t tried to approach me again. ‘Run! I am almost up, but a foot collides with my ribs and I collapse, smacking my head on a rock. Darkness collided with me, taking me in its cold grasp.
