Not now, not ever.” Maya stares at me for a beat before a laugh bursts out of her. She covers her mouth, but that only seems to make it worse. “Swingers?” she manages between laughs. “Ryder and I aren’t even like that. the man said as he stepped out of the shadows. He was tall, like most dragonkin with Sire blood were, I reckoned he was in his mid-thirties or so. He had light blue eyes and dark brown hair that hung down to his shoulders. His clothes were expensive and his hands looked like they had seen plenty of fights. “The infamous Ryder Grey, elite hunter of the supernatural world, we meet at last,” he said as he sat down on the chair that Clifford had placed in front of me. “I assume you’re Carlson,” I said to him and he smiled at me.

Ryder sat down beside me, but he kept some distance between us as if he didn't want to touch me. Ryder looked at me for a while after I had sat down. He was contemplating whether to tell me or not, because he was flexing his finger. "For everything in this world," Ryder started. His voice was calm, but a bit shaky. "There is something opposite or equal to it," he said. He flexed his wrist and rested his hands on his thigh. "I don't get it," I said to him. Ryder sighed and looked at me. "Max has the Rival wolf," his tone sounded irritated.

It would be nice to have one more ally in the party besides Adam. I had been coordinating with Ryder most of the week. His cover story was that he graduated with honors at Harvard. He’s an entrepreneur. His family owns a couple of restaurant chains in New York. He invests here and there. I asked him to rent a Boxster for the night and a nice Armani suit. I also asked him to rent a ring for the night or buy a fake one that could pass as the real thing. We even agreed to rent a room in the resort to leave no doubt that Ryder and I were for real.

"At least wait until Monday to tear her apart. We have guests." Ryder stepped out of the house, looking devastatingly handsome in a charcoal suit that strained against his massive frame. He greeted his sisters' husbands at the grill before turning toward Bethany. He wrapped a possessive arm around her waist, but his eyes immediately flicked to Ruth-Ann, burning with a silent, filthy heat that made her breath hitch. "Rachel, Ester, Linda," Ryder said, his voice smooth as bourbon. "You remember Bethany and her daughter, Ruth-Ann."

“Yes, of course, you little rascal, it has something to do with them.” Them. “Should I still spell it out for you? The Rigiddin family is their target. So you better warn your.. friend.” Ryder could only look down. He wanted to know more. He wanted to talk with Raeya and unravel the mysteries. But how could he, when he can’t even unravel his own feelings?

Humpton was just the beginning, but Ryder… Ryder is a different kind of problem altogether. One that I'm not sure I could solve as easily.

The Wolf Rider MC were playing pool at the other end of the bar, and a very large, very pissed-off-looking Steel was glaring at us. And hell, if eyes could kill--- I’d be in China! That's how far down under I’d be! Great! The one night I go out, I end up at the same place Steel’s at? Didn’t they already have everything they needed at the clubhouse? Did he really have to come out here to rain on my parade?

Madam Amelia seemed to know this as she nodded her head at me. “Now what? You can’t break your vow. What will you do? You can’t have a Wolf Rider running around Astoria.” There it was. She knew what her daughter was. The half human part of it was the least of it. The fact that she was a Rider—a creature that could control a werewolf with a simple command. A creature that ruined my family's life. A creature, who must be destroyed before it gains power. There hasn't been a rider born in half a century, and even before, there was only one that ruled Astoria.
