Kurai was originally named Kiryu but it sounds generic, boring and unoriginal so instead I gave him a name meaning dark. Fukuna was originally named Ushio and she was initially supposed to be intersex to match Cai Kang's genderfluidity because highschool me is always about representation rather than plot and story so as I grew older, I realize that I put too much to the point where the story gets all convoluted and terrible so after literally flipping a coin to choose one gender, Fukuna is

“Oh, my.” I look up and see Ryuu in the doorway. His eyes turn to their natural reptilian yellow with black slits as he sees Asuka. He approaches the woman without looking at anyone else in the room and bows deeply to her. He holds his hand out palm up for her to take. “Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.” He looks up at her and continues in his thin, raspy voice. “I’ve waited centuries. Would you do me the honor?” Asuka’s eyes are wide with surprise. She looks at me with her hand over her mouth in surprise, then back at him, sliding her other hand into his. The word rings through the room as they speak in unison.

Yui shaking her head. Ryu glanced at his sister through the rearview mirror. It was rare for her to admit someone else's strength so frankly. Yui often mocked Kenji, even though they were clearly equals. "Is he that good?" Ryu asked. "Yeah! He’s amazing! His arms can stretch like rubber, but he can’t swim and has no sense of direction. Still, he never loses in a fight. He’s awesome!" Ryu almost swerved off the road as Kyoko suddenly shouted excitedly and grabbed his arm.
