I can hear the murmur of voices, the clink of metal equipment, and the sharp, sudden crack of leather hitting skin somewhere in the back, followed immediately by a pained, but ecstatic moan. I swallow hard. The noise makes the hairs on my arms stand up.

Chapter 60 Soraya’s POV Silas held me as he led me back into the loud banquet hall. The noise hit me all at once, the music, the people, the smell of roasted meat and expensive cologne. It made my head spin. I couldn't stop thinking about John bleeding out in the dark yard and how suddenly the place became spotless. "Just take a breath, Soraya," Silas said, leaning close so I could hear him over the music. "You’re just tired. Let me go get you some water."

The sanctuary was quiet. It was that heavy, ringing silence that only happens right after a room has been loud, where the violence has cleared out and everyone left behind is silently checking their own bones and looking at one another to see who is still standing.
