Ken was now so grievously embarrassed that he could not even look at Emilia. The weight of his actions and his harsh words mixed with empathy weighed heavily on him, causing his shoulders to slump and his head to sink into his folded hands. Tears streamed down his face, his silent sobs echoing in the dimly lit den. Emilia, too, understood the pain of regret and the heavy burden of one's past actions. Though she kept her gaze averted, her cheeks were stained with her own silent tears, mirroring the emotions that gripped her heart.

I could feel my face burning in embarrassment. “I…”

The embarrassment she’d felt at the belch was nothing compared to the crippling shame that almost drove her back to her knees. “I’m fine,” she said, her voice too sharp, as if she were angry. Embarrassment often came out as anger, she mused. “It’s just . . . well, since I’ve been here I haven’t exactly had access to, you know, sanitary napkins.”

I jumped a bit onto my seat after realizing what did I had just said when I saw her face in confusion. “I m-mean, I like you, of course! It’s b-because you’re my classmate and you’re h-harmeless. That's w-what I was trying to say,” I stuttered, biting my lip because of the sudden embarrassment I felt. What the hell was that harmless I was talking about? The awkwardness lost instantly when I saw her smiled again, barely a sign that she didn’t make it as a big deal. That’s a relief. My mouth was constantly making mistakes and this is not good!

My mouth falls open in shock and a fair amount of horror as I watch icy brown droplets course their way down a male t-shirt covered chest. "Oh my god," I finally squeak. I'm all but dying of mortification as hot licks of embarrassment set fire to my normally pale cheeks. "I’m so sorry." Now would be a perfect time for the sidewalk to crack open and swallow me whole. Yep... right now. Right now, damn it.

The weight of the situation crashed down on me, and I sank to my knees on the cold pavement, unable to contain the flood of tears that spilled from my eyes. I felt a mix of embarrassment, anger, and overwhelming sadness. How had everything gone so wrong? All I wanted was answers, closure, and a chance to make sense of the chaos surrounding me. " Yeah, yes, I think an insect found its way into my eyes", I said as I started scratching my eyes, looking for the imaginary insect that had flown into it from nowhere, wallowing in the pool of shame and embarrassment, just like waving at an unfamiliar person only to realize that the person was waving at the other person behind you. Yeah, that feeling, multiplied by five, that was the weight of embarrassment I was carrying on my shoulders inside that vehicle.
