"Because he’s a murderer, Sage!" "The world is full of murderers!" Sage cried, her voice echoing off the steel beams. "And I am tired of tracking them! I’m tired of reading old texts about how we’re meant to die. I’m tired of the scent of ozone and the sound of bones breaking." She looked at Juniper, then back to me, her eyes pleading. "I want to live a normal life, Kira. I want to go to a library where the books aren't bound in skin. I want to wake up and not have to check the perimeter for husks. We’ve done enough. We saved the heirs. We saved the city."

I pull away sharply, a jolt of discomfort shooting through me. “Don’t,” I say hoarsely. “I’m sorry, I just, where is Sage?” The door opens before she can answer. And then everything starts to clear when I see her. Sage walks in holding a paper cup of coffee, her hair pulled back messily, her face tired and pale like she hasn’t slept properly in days. She freezes the second her eyes land on me. For a heartbeat, neither of us moves. Then relief slams into my chest so hard it almost hurts more than the accident.

I roll my head to him. Sage crosses his arms. “So you’ve accepted.” She holds up our hands. “Yes, I have and I have some things I need to say." Sage waves her to go ahead. “First. I won’t be a prisoner in my own city. I want to travel. I was locked in a cage for four years. I want to see things. Do things. I want to be free.” She lets go of my hand and walks toward Sage. “Darling, we talked about this. You can’t leave. Even for a short while. You keep the pool charged. If you leave, the pool will lose its power.” Sage put his hands in his pockets.

God knows how long I have waited for a day to be a part of a place where I wouldn't have time to cry about my sordid life. My gaze slowly drifted to a blonde girl who was guiding a group of rookies. Her countenance was stern and professional. Dressed in a crisp peach blouse and pencil skirt, she was busy dictating them while looking at her tablet from time to time. I walked towards her. "Uhmm, Ma'am, I am Honey Samuels," I introduced myself with a smile, instantly catching the attention of everyone as they shifted their heads towards me. But my smile slowly wavered, noticing their questionable eyes.

Just sad. Sage studied her. “You don’t know everything.” That made Piper look up. Sage moved toward the kitchen, deliberate in her steps. She reached above the refrigerator and pulled down an old metal tin Piper hadn’t seen opened in years, the kind that used to hold recipe cards and needles. She brought it to the table, set it down, and opened it. Inside were folded documents, yellowed slightly at the edges. Piper straightened slowly. “I burned his notebooks,” Sage said. “His printed emails. His copied files. Everything I was compiling.”

Author’s POV Sage felt the phone in her pocket vibrate. She dug into it and took it out, heart racing as she did so. A part of her wanted to ignore the message, it wasn’t worth it but she had already come this far. She wouldn’t back out now, this was for her people. She opened the message and read it to herself. Almost successful

Kat advances until she is in front of Sage. She holds out her hands and holds Sage's hands. Sege's hands were calloused and much larger than hers. Kat looked like a child holding her mother's hand.
