The words slipped out before she could catch them—a reflex from a summer seven years dead. Max looked at her steadily, a flicker of something like gratitude crossing his face. "I know," he said. Samuel was already at the trunk, tossing in a small duffel. He’d traded his training gear for a dark denim jacket and black jeans. He looked less like a champion and more like a man who was prepared for a fight he didn't plan on losing. He moved with a quiet, lethal grace, his size making the sedan look small by comparison. He opened the door for her, his eyes meeting hers for a fraction of a second. No words were needed. She got in, and he took the wheel.
