The silence between us
She melted into him, her hand gripping the back of his neck, grounding him.
When they parted, she whispered, “Promise me something.”
“Anything.”
“Promise me you’ll let me in when it gets hard. No walls, no silence. Just us.”
His throat worked as he swallowed. “That’s harder for me than you know.”
“I do know,” she said gently. “But we’re not them, Gabriel. I’m not Joana, or your father, or anyone who used you. If you shut me out, you’ll lose me. And I don’t want us to break because of fear.”
