But I needed something to listen to during my long commute, so I gave it a shot. The narrator is what completely sold me. They don't just read the text; they become the main character, Valerius. The book has a lot of internal monologue about his magical corruption and his conflicted loyalty to the Crimson Order, and the narrator captures that weary, sardonic, yet dangerously powerful tone perfectly. The magical incantations have a real weight to them, a kind of guttural resonance that just wouldn't land the same way on the page.

It's not a perfect listen. Some of the battle scenes, which are very visually described in the prose, can feel a bit chaotic in audio form if you're not fully focused. You might lose track of who's casting what. But the political intrigue scenes in the later chapters? Absolutely masterful in audio. Hearing the subtle shifts in a character's voice during a tense negotiation adds a whole new layer. I found myself rewinding just to catch the nuance. For me, the performance elevates the material from a solid 3-star read to a 4.5-star experience. If you're even mildly curious about the story, the audiobook is the definitive way to consume it. I'm already dreading the wait for the sequel's audio release.

It's incredibly OP when you think about it, and the author had to write in some serious limitations, like the warlock needing to truly understand the 'fuel' he's burning and suffering proportional backlash.

That's why the big mid-novel twist hits so hard. When he's forced to confront the main antagonist, he tries to burn the concept of 'fate' binding them. It fails spectacularly, not because the power isn't strong enough, but because he realizes he's part of the fuel—his own destiny is intertwined with it. The power system is a metaphor for self-destruction through ambition. The scenes where he slowly burns away memories to power a spell are way more chilling than any battlefield pyrotechnics.

I always felt the later arcs underutilized this. It became more flashy and less psychological, which was a shame.

The pacing can get bogged down in world-building details about the magic system in the middle chapters, but the last third really picks up speed with some shocking betrayals.
