With trembling fingers, I tapped the article. The words hit me like punches. They called me a gold digger. A social climber. A manipulative slut who had supposedly dumped one brother for the richer one. They painted me like some heartless opportunist — a woman who had “snared” Andrew for money and status. And then there were the pictures. Old photos of me and Matthew — one of us laughing together at a café, another of his hand casually on my waist. The comments beneath were brutal. She’s disgusting.

Even printing documents meant running hundreds of yards to a copy shop outside the building. The torment from both lives gnawed at my nerves until I felt I was about to be driven mad by this absurd, malicious hostility. At last, the workday ended. The new fingerprint scanner had been installed. The moment it was time to clock out, I rushed over. This felt like my only hope. If I could escape the curse of the fingerprint machine, maybe I could finally find a breakthrough or some explanation for all these bizarre events. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before, and it sent shivers down my spine making me immoveable. I couldn't identify its source but it was enough to render me immobile, like a deer caught in the headlights. Before I could process what was happening, the car door flung open and a towering scary looking burly figure loomed before me. Fear gripped me as I looked into his intimidating, frightening eyes. I tried to move, to escape, but it was as if the strange scent had taken away all control over my body.

The scent is wrong—familiar yet unnatural, layered with decay, as if something dead had walked too long in living skin. My breath comes sharp and shallow. I should go back inside.
