Sane didn’t want to hold onto anyone, especially Seleen because he was afraid that he’d startle her again, but as the beating of his heart was already becoming unbearable, he grabbed Haniel’s arm instead. He heard the girl grin for she knew how scared he’d become when it came to situations like that. Luckily, she didn’t tease him a few minutes ago when he said that he was afraid of ghosts or else he’d feel even more ashamed, especially in front of Seleen. He wasn’t just a fan of scary things. He could even count with his fingers the scary movies that he had seen throughout his life, and it wasn’t even more than ten.

They didn’t move like the thing that attacked me. None of it matched. I kept scrolling, searching for anything that felt familiar. Something that made me feel like I wasn’t losing my mind. Then, at the bottom of one of the pages, a link caught my attention. It didn’t look like an ad. It didn’t look like a normal article either. It looked old. Simple text. No picture. The title made me choke out a tiny laugh, even though nothing felt funny: “Wolves… or something else? Understanding the werewolf theory.”

"She's not exactly subtle, is she?" I couldn't help but smile. "But you and Dr. Reynolds," Simon continued. "There's something there. I can see it." My chest got tight. "It's complicated." "Doesn't have to be. You deserve someone who shows you matter." After the meeting, I walked past Kieran's office. The door cracked open. Papers covered his desk. Medical journals. Research articles. I stepped closer and my blood went cold. The headlines jumped out at me. "Animal Attacks in the Pacific Northwest." "Creatures with Glowing Eyes." "Unknown Predator Kills Multiple Victims."

Fear crawled slowly down my spine. Because if something was capable of shocking Alpha Darius,then whatever was written on that paper had to be very, very bad.

"Let's not talk about death when I binged watch a ton of scary movies last night. I swear I couldn't wake up to pee last night, there were eyes everywhere," His words made me roll my eyes. Scary movies and Colby weren't a good combination. I was just surprised he hadn't disturbed my sleep by calling and saying Chucky was outside his window this time around. "Did we not talk about this last time Colby? Scary movies aren't your thing. Try some drama series." I sighed. "If I watch drama series I'd basically be manifesting drama into my subconscious mind." He whined. I look at him with a raised brow. "So you want to manifest scary shit instead?"

With trembling fingers, I tapped the article. The words hit me like punches. They called me a gold digger. A social climber. A manipulative slut who had supposedly dumped one brother for the richer one. They painted me like some heartless opportunist — a woman who had “snared” Andrew for money and status. And then there were the pictures. Old photos of me and Matthew — one of us laughing together at a café, another of his hand casually on my waist. The comments beneath were brutal. She’s disgusting.

Even printing documents meant running hundreds of yards to a copy shop outside the building. The torment from both lives gnawed at my nerves until I felt I was about to be driven mad by this absurd, malicious hostility. At last, the workday ended. The new fingerprint scanner had been installed. The moment it was time to clock out, I rushed over. This felt like my only hope. If I could escape the curse of the fingerprint machine, maybe I could finally find a breakthrough or some explanation for all these bizarre events. I took a deep breath and placed my hand on the new scanner.
