Gratitude? Using my father's legacy as a thank you gift for his woman? Sofia smugly took the gun, playing with it in her hands, the barrel casually sweeping past my face. "Oh, it's a little heavy. Thank you, Viola. I'll take good care of it." In that split second, everything changed. A red laser dot cut through the smoke and settled on Gavin’s forehead. "Sniper!" Gavin’s reaction was terrifyingly fast. But he didn't dive for me.

"Don't you think… don't you think Paul deserves a much better Luna? Someone who would be more acceptable to the pack, someone with the skills and strength to match his own. Perhaps, someone without any scars from their bitter past-" Before I could finish my question, Jayson signaled for a short break from the combat. Stepping away from the arena, he fetched me a bottle of water and considered it for less than a second before saying, "No." "No?!" I repeated the one- word answer he had given as I spat out my water, almost spraying him unintentionally. "No, I don't think he needs anyone else as his partner, nor do I think you are any less deserving of him. Did you know Lexie, that not too long

It lingered even after Khalid stood back up. "Tell the men to stay alert. Watch him closely. Search him thoroughly for weapons or anything unusual. If he tries to get clever or pulls anything dumb, shoot him," Scorpio commanded, his tone cold. "And inform Sera to get ready for what's coming." "Understood, boss," Khalid replied, then exited the room. Once alone, Scorpio erupted into laughter that echoed off the walls. The news thrilled him. Joy bubbled up inside him as he processed the information. Tristan, the formidable opponent, had crossed into Russian territory. Soon, he would be here.

"Two scouts. Fast, quiet, thermal-masking. Reach the relay station through the southwest arc, disrupt the transmission." "That's two scouts inside a ring of fifty-four siege engines," one of Vance's wolves said. "Two scouts who grew up on ridges in the dark," Xander said. "Which is exactly what this requires." He looked at Vance. Vance looked at his scouts. Two of them were already checking their gear without being asked. "Thirty minutes to position," the first one said. "Twenty-five," Xander said. The scout looked at the terrain. "Twenty-five," she agreed.

"The bitch is wounded. She won't go far." "What about the wolf?" The second one stayed near the path, his light dancing over the obsidian floor. "Command said it’s a terraformer. If that thing sneezes, this whole island goes into a deep freeze." "Then don't let it sneeze. Kill the brat on sight." They passed my hiding spot. I watched their heels move past my eyes. Five feet. Three feet. The lead scout stopped right in front of the crevice where I’d shoved Dante. He tilted his head, his orange goggles flaring as he adjusted the focus.

Some kind of gravity urges me to lean into him, but I don’t dare. Eventually, he clears his throat and meets my eyes again. “When we scout, we go in pairs,” he says. “We could do that. We could be scouts together.” I understand what he’s saying. If we’re going to do this—and we have to do this—it can’t be like before. There can’t be a bad guy. So we’ll be in it together. “Okay. How do scouts work?” Some tension leaves his body. “Well, usually, one of us keeps an eye out for threats while the other looks for signs of prey.”
