But Xander shook off her arm, tugged a shirt on, bare feet slapping against stone, down the spiral stairs, into the echo of the foyer. The door opened with a groan. The figure outside was small, shrouded in plastic, but when it looked up the face was sharp, lips cracked with cold. Genderless, ageless.
“Xander?” the figure said.
He nodded.
The stranger handed him a thin plastic parcel, blue tape curling from the edge. The paper inside was waterproofed, edges sealed with the symbol of the Children’s Congress—a single eye, weeping stylized rays. That froze him. He hadn’t needed to see it again, not ever.
