I placed my second hand on my own chest to compare our heart beat rate, and realized mine was faster than his. I looked up at him. “Easton?” I called and he smiled at me. “Why is my heartbeat faster than yours? Your heart isn’t beating at the normal rate. Why is that?” I asked, worried that something might be wrong with him. I thought our heart rates were supposed to be the same. Why was his different?

The monitor. Beep. I nearly collapsed. Beep... beep... A pulse. Weak, faint—but there. The doctor exhaled, his hand shaking as he adjusted the equipment. “He’s back. But it’s faint. We need to stabilize him.” A rush of voices. The nurses moving rapidly, adjusting IV lines and rechecking vitals. But something wasn’t right. The heart monitor... There were two sets of heartbeats. The doctor paled, staring at the screen. “That’s... not possible.”

Two distinct shapes, curled, one larger than the other. "Twin A is measuring right on track," Priya said, moving the wand slowly. "Good size. Heart rate's strong." She adjusted. "And Twin B there we go. Also on track. A little smaller, which is completely normal for the second twin, nothing to worry about." I looked at the screen. Two heartbeats, two flickering rhythms, side by side. Camille had gone very quiet beside me. I glanced over and found her with both hands pressed to her mouth, eyes bright.

Damian said, his voice dropping an octave. "Stay focused. Ground yourself." I didn't answer. The Sovereign engine in my chest was redlining, the Third Heartbeat thudding in a frantic, syncopated rhythm that felt like it was trying to punch through my ribs. Seventy-two beats. Seventy-two beats. It was mimicking him, but it was moving too fast, dragging my nervous system along for the ride. My skin was misting. White vapor rose from my arms in thick plumes as my sweat vaporized the second it hit the air. Usually, my heart beats four times slower than anyone. It was not like this before, it used to beat like a normal heart but with time I learned this art of controlling my heartbeat. "No, sir, you have two healthy babies with two healthy heartbeats." The man is smiling at Sean, who now looks frozen.
