It did not. Instead, heat surged again, blooming beneath her skin like a second pulse. Her heart raced to keep up, each beat loud and insistent in her ears. Elizabeth pressed her palm flat to her chest. Too fast. Too shallow. She had measured pulses her entire life. She knew what this meant. Her legs wobbled beneath her, joints aching as though she had walked miles in the night. The floor felt strangely far away, each step delayed, as if her feet no longer trusted the ground to meet them.

“ Forgive me for trespassing, it's just that you looked stressed”, Cole said, his arms still wrapped around me, his body moving a little bit to and fro as if he was dancing to a song. “ Apology accepted”, I said, smiling tiredly and resting my head on his shoulders. We need to stabilize him.” A rush of voices. The nurses moving rapidly, adjusting IV lines and rechecking vitals. But something wasn’t right. The heart monitor... There were two sets of heartbeats. The doctor paled, staring at the screen. “That’s... not possible.”

Two distinct shapes, curled, one larger than the other. "Twin A is measuring right on track," Priya said, moving the wand slowly. "Good size. Heart rate's strong." She adjusted. "And Twin B there we go. Also on track. A little smaller, which is completely normal for the second twin, nothing to worry about." I looked at the screen. Two heartbeats, two flickering rhythms, side by side. Camille had gone very quiet beside me. I glanced over and found her with both hands pressed to her mouth, eyes bright.

“Yes. We don't want to know just yet.” Dr. Morgan nodded, moving the wand slightly across my abdomen. Then she paused. Her brow lifted. The speaker crackled again and another rapid rhythm joined the first. Distinct and separate from the first. My heart stopped. “What's that?” Roman blinked. “Wait.” Dr. Morgan’s smile widened slowly, knowingly. “Well,” she said warmly, “it sounds like we have two very strong heartbeats. Seems like we have a little runaway in there.” There was silence first. Then everything happened at once.
