A faint, almost imperceptible third rhythm joined the other two. She leaned closer, adjusting the settings.

Silence stretched—then another flutter, faint but steady. A fourth. Her gaze snapped to mine, wide, disbelieving. “Olivia… there are four.” The room tilted. Sound roared in my ears. Four steady rhythms overlap, drowning everything else. Four. The paper sheet tore under my grip. “No,” I whispered, chest convulsing. “No, that can’t—” Hana’s hand landed gently on my arm. “It can. It’s rare, but it happens. Four healthy heartbeats.”

A tiny, fragile life trying to find its footing in a storm. Thump... A long pause. Adrian held his breath, his eyes wide, his soul suspended in the silence between the beats.
