I could hardly believe it—a zombie with a heartbeat. Magnus' pale gray eyes had softened, his whole being shifting closer to that of a living man. But deep down, I knew the truth. A zombie was still a zombie. No matter how many emotions or human traits he seemed to possess, his brain had long been dead. After I came into his life, Magnus rarely left my side. He seldom went out, always staying close to me.

The marble beneath my boots was no longer just humming. It was palpitating. In a human patient, a rapidly accelerating, irregular heartbeat is classified as tachycardia. It is a sign that the body is under extreme stress, fighting to pump oxygen to a system that is suddenly demanding more power than the heart can comfortably supply. But this was not a human patient. This was a tectonic plate, and the sheer volume of biological weight we had just introduced to the Palace was acting like a massive dose of adrenaline.

Decker’s body tightened. “What is it?” Dr. Maren tilted the screen slightly. “Well,” she said carefully, “that appears to be a second heartbeat.” The room went silent. Lotty blinked. Decker blinked. Evelyn, standing near the back of the room, made a sound that was suspiciously close to a delighted gasp. Lotty slowly turned her head toward Decker. “Second?”

" She stood and walked toward me before pressing a finger against my chest, right above my heart. "We're strict with you because we need you healthy. If you get careless for even a second and something happens to this heart, how are you going to answer Nathaniel? How are you going to answer to the family?" The same words. Always the same words.
