Seeing Around Corners Novels & Stories

I'll be in big trouble if I get caught. I hurriedly look around for any escape, the only path you can exit from is the one you entered from. My eyes land on a corner filled with overgrown thick, I don't waste a second in sprinting to that direction, I try my best to not step on any dry leaves. Just as I hide myself behind the spot, the unknown person walks out from the narrow path.

"Damn only if I was there for the search warrant I'm sure I would have made some kind of discovery-" A small head peeks through the corner from the place he just walked in through the stairs. Only Ren felt the burning sensation over the side of the head-snapping his head in the same direction. Just to find no one, Ren raised his bow in response the very next second shaking his head. Turning his head back to look in front of him, making the tiny head peek through the small gap at him. Once again making Ren do the same what he has done before staring at the same spot where he felt someone was staring.

"Two hostiles approaching from the right corridor in five seconds." I signaled to my team, and we pressed ourselves against the walls just as two armed men rounded the corner. They never had a chance to raise their weapons. "How are you doing this?" I muttered as we moved past the fallen guards. "The cameras are down, the security system is dark." "I don't need cameras to see, cousin," came the cryptic response. "Take the next right. Three more between you and Amelia. They're nervous – their movements are erratic. Be careful."

"Something just caught my eye but I can't just tell what it is, maybe I should try repeating this motion I just made" He once again tried to walk around the shelf but nothing spectacular happened. He tried repeating his motions for the umpteenth time but he didn't catch anything else, therefore, he decided to give up on the quest and resume his clumsy book search. Just when he was about to wind around the shelf again, something moved. He immediately became alert and tried to memorize what he had just seen, slowly he walked over to a book in the corner of the opposite shelf stacked in between a host of others. I keep sneaking forward as quietly as I can, stopping from time to time searching for any indication that I’m not alone any more. After walking for about 5 minutes I see that the hallway opens up to a larger area. I stop at the corner and listen for noise. It’s still quiet so I carefully look around the corner. It is a large open area with chairs, tables and couches. Along one of the walls there is a counter with a sink and a large cabinet that looks somewhat like a fridge, but what catches my eye are the large windows that cover one of the walls. Outside the window all I can see is the black of space and a variety of dots that must be stars and far away planets.

I stammer. But just as I raise my hand to point at the shadow I saw in the corner of the room. However, when we both turn to look, we find that it's no longer there. There’s no shadow lurking in the corner. The only thing standing there is a vase on a table and a section of the folded curtain tucked away to bring in more natural light from outside.

With my cloak pulled tightly around my shoulders and my boots fastened, I snuck out of my room and proceeded to make my way towards the area that Dorian had suggested we search last night. As I got closer to the building that looked like a greenhouse I spotted a pair of dark shadows that moved rapidly around the building's corner. I stopped and ducked down, inching closer as I started to hear muffled voices. I managed to press my back against a decorative stone just around the corner from where the shadows were, making it a dangerous place to be since all they had to do was take two steps around the corner and they’d be able to see me, or sense my presence.

I turned around, I saw Kael walking toward me. His expression tightened the moment he saw me. “You shouldn’t be out here, Luna,” he said. “I heard someone talking over there,” I replied quickly, pointing toward the corner. Kael’s eyes flickered for a second before he followed me. Together, we rounded the corner. My steps slowed, but when we reached the corner, there was no one there. The corridor was completely empty. I stared at the spot where I was sure the voice had come from.

My feet moved silently, tracing their path. They vanished into a secluded corner, hidden from prying eyes. Curiosity got the better of me. I crept closer, peeking around the corner. My heart sank. Amber's hands roamed Alex's chest, her lips whispering against his ear. He sat motionless, expression neutral.

Eyes shut, barely breathing. And something in the corner… something unseen but felt… shifted in the shadows. Watching, Waiting.
