Slowly, reluctantly, the voices quieted, though their fury remained sharp as claws.
“You forget yourselves,” he said, his voice like steel. “I am your Alpha. I was chosen not by vote but by blood, by battle, by the moon itself. If you wish to challenge me, then do so openly. But you will not chain my mate. Not while I draw breath.”
His words hung heavy, daring any to step forward. None did.
But Mirek’s expression was unreadable. He did not shout, did not snarl. He only inclined his head slightly, his eyes cold. “Then so be it, Alpha. The council will remember this choice. And so will the pack.”
