So I stood there, trembling, swallowing back every word that threatened to escape. Serena tossed the rose dress aside and picked another, muttering to herself about which color would best impress Kai’s mother. She looked over her shoulder at me and smirked again. “You will wear something simple, of course. I would not want you to embarrass me with your poor little hand-me-downs.” Heat flared in my cheeks, not from shame but from anger I dared not voice. I pressed my lips together until they hurt.

I hadn't wanted to break it. Serena was gardening. She was on her knees at the far end of the rose wall, doing something careful to the base of a new plant, her whole attention on it. Her hair was tied back. There was a streak of dirt on her left cheek. She didn't know I was watching because she was entirely somewhere else, completely absorbed in what she was doing. She had that way about her with things she cared about. That particular quality of attention, like whatever she was focused on was the only thing in the world.

A hefty tip. The woman's eyes widened slightly, but she took it and uttered a low thanks before going back to do her job. "Yes," I murmured, still getting used to being associated with a name I knew almost nothing about except for the power and protection that came with it. "Nikolai," he held out a hand. "It is nice to meet you, Black Rose." I took his hand, not wanting to be rude. His palms were soft, dry, and the warmth of it caught me off guard. He held me longer than necessary before letting go.

She clapped her hands as if she was pleased, "His grandfather really has eyes." My cheeks heated when I understood what she meant. "I'm Yekatherina, but you can call me Yeka. It's nice to finally have another female apart from Anya," she said and held out her hand. "Rosaline, but you can call me Rose," I shook it. "That's great. I'm Alexei's close friend and his assassin," she said with pride. She was beautiful with her straight blonde hair and bottle green eyes. She was slim and tall, taller than me.

The associate beside him was staring at Serena with wide eyes. ♧♧♧ Rose's Pov Serena pulled out the chair across from me. She sat down without a care in the world. A drop of tear landed on the back of my hand. I ignored it and made a rose appear out of thin air just like a magician. "When we first started dating, you were nothing but a bouncer. The owner's enemies came looking for trouble. On Valentin's Day, you were severely injured and covered in blood. I was worried sick. I cried helplessly as I looked at your wounds. But what did you do? You pulled out a rose that you had been hiding, and it was covered in blood." Thomas chuckled as he took the rose from me.

My lungs burned, my legs screamed, but I didn’t care, adrenaline kept me moving faster, my heart hammering in my chest. Yoooo… you’re probably wondering who this bitch is. “Yeah, that’s me.
