She had been conditioned for this moment, trained to endure pain, to suppress emotion. The shackles were an inevitable part of the ritual. She had known this day would come. There was another round of laughter and I tried to open my eyes all the way but the lids wouldn't move past the swelling around them. My wrists are raw and bleeding from the tight metal bindings that have kept me prisoner for days. As the first shackle snaps open, I wince at the sharp pain that shoots through my arms. But it's nothing compared to the relief I feel as the weight of the chains is lifted off me. I flex my fingers and try to soothe the aching in my wrists as he moves on to the next shackle. With each snapping chain, I feel a sense of liberation, a glimmer of hope that I might be able to escape this place. But why hadn’t I noticed it?” She put her hands on her chest, trying to remember the times where she met other women, but no thoughts of them wearing shackles or something came to her mind. “It’s not something that can be seen, Z. Stepping towards the guard, he asked, "Is it that time already?" Without a word, the guard opened the gate and Shaun braced himself for the inevitable. The cold touch of iron shackles encircled his wrists, their weight a tangible reminder of his predicament. The guard yanked on the chain to urge him forward. With a resigned acceptance, he followed the guard's lead, his thoughts consumed by the events that had led him to this moment. Are you deaf now?” the guard barked, pulling the chains that shackled my wrists to the wall. “Move!” My legs, stiff and sore from days of barely moving, wobbled beneath me. Heavy chains clanked with each step as I shuffled forward, wrists bound, ankles trapped. The guard shoved me hard in the back, nearly sending me to the filthy floor. “I said move!” “I heard you the first time, Shrek,” I muttered, just loud enough for him to catch.
