ZANE’S POV “I love you too, Zane,” she replied as she stared at me with glassy eyes. I set my empty glass down on the tray and stared back at her across the low table. The last of the fish and rice was gone. Outside the villa the sky had shifted into soft evening colors, pale gold melting into rose and then into a deeper blue at the edges. The lagoon reflected every change. The water that had been bright turquoise earlier now held longer shadows and a quieter surface.

Magic screamed. The tear behind the Fractured widened with a sound like metal tearing, thunder splitting, and the wail of ancient dying magic all at once. Light and shadow poured through the rupture in torrents—feral, uncontained, colliding violently in midair and blasting outward in shockwaves that shook the Seam itself. Aria staggered back, shielding her face as a wave of pure light slammed into the plane, instantly followed by a wave of crushing shadow. Erevan threw an arm around her, dragging her tightly against him as his magic exploded outward to shield them.

HIS DARKEST SHADE BOOK-THREE ~Prologue~ “Even if you end up hating me for it.” His tone was vicious. “I might scare you,” he continued, his gaze roaming over her trembling form, “but they are far worse—formidable, vicious… and willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want.” He gestured toward her. “Including you.” “Never.” She shook her head, her voice trembling but firm. “I’m not scared of your words. You’re just trying to scare me so I’ll listen to you!”

Sunshine screams as the mixture flying through the air strikes her down. I step inside the protection ring. I reach out to make an opening and pull her onto our side to protect her, but before I can pull Sunshine into my magic protection, one of the minions grabs Sunshine. He hits Sunshine one time with the salty-smelling potion, and it penetrates her body.

"You know, in the world of mages, eye color is a significant indicator of power. For regular mages, when they're tapping into their abilities, their eyes turn a vivid shade of purple. It's a well-known trait, almost a hallmark of their magic." He paused, looking intently at Astrid. "But for the royal family, it's different. They possess a unique and rare eye color. When they channel their powers, their eyes transform into a mesmerizing shade of opalescent teal, shimmering with hues of blue and green. This color is a symbol of their elevated status and the ancient magic flowing through their veins."

All potions have its own distinctive tell. The color shows how potent it is. Lighter hues always indicate that the potion is used for trivial problems; such as a common cold, headaches, or a small bout of bad luck. If the color is more intense, those vials are often used for more serious concerns; such as plagues, restoring limbs, or removing curses. To the untrained eye, the color was nothing more than a decorative detail. Another way to appeal to non-magic users to sell and make money.

The air around her crackled with raw power as she turned back towards the attackers, her fear morphing into a blinding rage. With a scream that seemed to shake the very foundations of the house, Aqua unleashed a torrent of dark magic. The energy exploded from her, a violent wave of force that knocked the witches off their feet. The room was bathed in a sinister glow as the dark magic tore through the intruders, their cries of pain mingling with the howling wind.

“I’ll start analyzing their patterns. We can predict their next move.” “You’ve already done enough, Sienna. This fight is getting darker by the day.” Enzo said softly. Sienna stepped closer. “Then let me be your light.” “You already are.” Enzo said, his voice low. They stood in silence for a moment, the weight of the war pressing down on them, before Enzo finally spoke. “This ends with Mateo and Javier. No more games.” Sienna nodded, her resolve unshaken. “No more games.”

And she intended to. The match was set for two weeks later. Magic veils across the Border buzzed with the news. Every hallway, every mess hall, every training square— “Two dual-wielding mages go head-to-head.” That line stopped me in my tracks. 'Dual wielding?' I blinked. Scanned the scroll again. And then I saw it. Jade Ishola: Fire magic and strength augmenting magic. My chest tightened. It wasn’t another magic. It was me. My inner chi. My beast strength. The primal energy I’d learned to control—not cast.

The library descends into an uncomfortable silence, one I'm itching to break but I don't say anything, patiently waiting for him to speak. “Did you see the rift?” I nod. “It wasn't there when I left.” “And it's just the beginning. Even before you left, the shadows in our realm had intensified but we've been able to keep them at bay and prevent things from escalating. And now we have rifts.” Leaning back on his couch, fatigue washing over his face, he sighs, “Who knows what else will come? The human realm is collapsing, so is our realm but at a more obvious level.”
