The girl is gorgeous until she sneers at me, her eyes looking me up and down. "Watch where you are going!" She shouts in the most dramatic way possible. "And what are you wearing? If you are a student, you need to wear the color of your house. Aren't you sorted yet?" "Sorted?" I ask. Two other girls are glaring at me from behind the blonde girl, clearly her little minions. They all wear the same blue cheerleading clothes, and blondie got pointy ears—definitely Fae. "At Magic Academy, there are four houses; each one represents an element—as you can see, we all belong in the house of water. It values beauty, but beauty doesn't seem important to you since you're wearing those clothes."

It was hand written. She went on, flipping the book and stopping to read through some parts of it. It was a book about spells and she found herself laughing at the silliness of the thought that magic was still in existence. Some of the spells in the book made Matilda to shake her head and conclude that the book had been written during the time that witches existed. Some of the recipes in the book had ingredients like a two day old crow's blood, the crushed bark of a cider tree, four leaved clovers, mint leaves that had bloomed in the summer and many other bizarre ingredients.

“ All magic spells are dark magic aren’t they?” Logan asked setting his fork down having finished his sixth omelette. “ Hah, that’s so typical of you,” Levy rolled her eyes as she scoffed. “ No, for your information all magic spells aren’t dark magic. Just like how there are good and bad shifters in your community, there are good and bad mages in mine.” She took a look at Logan’s expression and understood that he didn’t understand what she said, with an eye roll she simplified what she just said, “ Think like this if I was to turn you into a pup here and now, you wouldn’t get hurt in any way——”

From a table nearby, Viktor replies, “They are called Shades…those specifically were some of The Riders. They use dark magics, similar to shadow magic, but more vile.” “I have heard that term before,” Malleus says. “Me too, and I don’t like it! I don’t like them being so close to our borders,” Kaiya says.

And finally… shadow. Not darkness. Shadow. Living, curling, intelligent. It reached for her fingertips like it knew her name. Six forms. Six elements. Fire. Shadow. Ice. Earth. Wind. Magic. Solari. Umbraen. Glacien. Terravyn. Velastra. Drakarae. Impossible.

“I would sense the magic if it were so.” I dismounted and unsaddled Coryfe as the mage sat on one of the branches of the fallen tree and drew from a bag he wore under his cloak, a small book, bound in leather, with curls of metal protecting the corners and clasping the covers shut. “We need a fire,” he said to me, his fingers stroking the cover reverently. There was no writing on the cover or binding, but I could see something had been embossed into the leather. Perhaps the embossing was the shadow of writing that had once been picked out with ink, but which time had faded or flaked away.

“Not good that he wants to strangle you. Just… good to know. I wasn’t sure if you were like… best friends or partners or… I don’t know.” Domenico’s lips twitched upward again. “Brothers. For better or worse.” I nodded, feeling braver now that I hadn’t been kicked out or glared at yet. And because my mouth clearly had a death wish, the second question tumbled out before I could stop it. “And… why do you always wear shades? Even inside?” Another beat of silence. Longer this time. Heavy enough to make my stomach twist a little. Domenico’s fingers stilled against the counter.

And its eyes, god, its eyes were empty voids that seemed to swallow light. A Shade. I'd heard stories. Creatures from the void between worlds. Summoned by dark magic. Nearly impossible to kill. And Morgessa had just called one into the throne room. "What have you done?" Caspian's voice was horrified. "What needed to be done." Morgessa was already backing toward the exit. "The Shade has one purpose. One target. The false queen. It won't stop until she's dead. And nothing, not even a lycan king, can protect her from it."

I sneer, dragging her back to Anastasia and march right back into the fracas of magic. Magical lights of blue, green, purple, yellow, red, gold splash across the sky. It's actually really pretty. It's funny because the black magic coming from the Abyss isn't even half as powerful as ours is. They don't actually know how to use offensive magic. All they are able to do is put up weak shields that crumble moments later. I'd laugh... but now's not the time.
