I catch my reflection in another small, burbling creek as I leap, seeing only my eyes shining like polished amber against a blanket of black night. I’ve become a shadow, like Kenna. I blend into the darkness, silent as a ghost and faster than the rolling, incoming gloom of night as the rogues chase the sunset. I launch into the air, shift to my human form, and lean into my twin blades, driving them down into the spine of the first rogue. It falls with a crack, black blood spraying through the air. I’m off its back before it even touches the ground, sending an arrow through the neck of the rogue beside it.

The blood pouring down my face certainly didn’t help. Nobody would be betting on me. A gate opened on the other side of the ring and from the depths of the shadows stalked a Rogue – in wolf form. His fur was shaggy and dull gray. He snarled, baring broken, yellow teeth. There was no fighting it anymore. As much as I didn’t want to show who I truly was – I wasn’t going out like this. Power pulsed in my chest, building higher as the Rogue stalked closer, drawing out viscous cheers from the crowd.

The other wolves that I had spotted during my scan remained hidden, probably waiting for a signal before they stepped out. The rogue chuckled, a low, mocking sound that grated on my nerves. "You can call me Shade. The Rogue Alpha, as they like to say." The gall of this guy. I thought to myself wondering about the amount of boldness mixed with craziness he had to have to call himself the Rogue Alpha.

"The shadows selected you for a purpose." The earth below us split open, and the glow of the blood moon appeared to grow stronger. My hands shook as the shadows encircled me once more, their gestures erratic and uncertain. “No,” I murmured, tightening my hands into fists. “I’m different from you.” The Rogue King lifted his arms, causing the shadows surrounding him to spiral into a huge spear. “Then demonstrate it.” He threw the spear towards me, the power of it slicing through the air. I hardly had time to respond. My instincts kicked in, and I lifted my hands.

she roared, staff spinning, striking again, ribs snapping under the blow. Kevin lunged, claws slashing its flank, fur parting, blood spraying, Shade’s growl vibrating in his chest. “Run, or die!” His amber eyes burned, tattoo pulsing, muscles straining as he tackled the rogue, pinning it, claws sinking deep. Shade roared, triumphant. Rip it, pup! She’s safe!

she said, breaking free of his grip. The Architect laughed again, his voice echoing like thunder. “You’re stubborn, I’ll give you that. But it won’t save you.” Annabel ignored him, focusing on the rogue. “You said he’s not invincible. What aren’t you telling me?” The rogue hesitated, then sighed. “He’s not whole. His power comes from the shadows. If we sever his connection to them…” “How?” He didn’t answer, his expression dark. “Tell me!” The Architect raised his hand again, but before he could attack, the rogue lunged, striking at the base of his shadowy form. The Architect roared, his form flickering again.

“Where is she?” The rogue with the torn ear stepped closer, his fur bristling. “She is with him.” My voice dropped, sharp as a blade. “With who?” The rogue’s lips curled back. “The Shadow Alpha.” Everything inside me went still. “I don’t know that name,” I said, steadying my voice even though my mind raced. “You will,” the rogue rasped. “He waits for you.” I didn’t wait for more. I lunged. The world turned into claws, snarls, ripping fur, broken bones. I tore through the first rogue so fast his body hit the ground before the others even reacted. The second tried to circle me...he didn’t make it more than two steps. The third tried to run.

The shadows twist around my hands, pulling at the ground beneath me, creating a shield of darkness in front of me. I don’t know how I’m doing it. I don’t know how I’m controlling the shadows at all. But it feels right. The rogue lunges, and I thrust my hands forward. The shadows lash out, slamming into the wolf with the force of a hundred storms. It crashes to the ground, howling in pain. But I won't stop. I can’t stop. The shadows surge forward, wrapping around the rogue, pulling it down. It struggles, wrestling, but I hold it there, the power inside me feeding off its fear, its anger. The shadows are alive now, pulsing, hungry.
