Proles, these genetically engineered animals were monsters and Maddox had already seen with his own eyes what these beasts could do. He didn't want to imagine what she would be waiting for at her destination. But he would find out, because he was Venator, a state-approved hunter whose job it was to get the prole plague under control.

He turned and retrieved a heavy tome from the counter behind him, then walked over and sat it in front of William. It was a beautiful book with a hand-woven navy-blue front cover. It was decorated with ancient magic symbols, long forgotten by all but a select few. Paoli opened the book with one hand and pointed out the section.

Marretje adds when she sees me stare longer than necessary at the books; little does she know that I have less interest in reading. I have my hands on the drawing in no time, my fingers neatly trailing the stained, softened edges of the paper. Something about the rough sketch etches a feeling of familiarity with it, but I am not certain if Katelyn once showed it to me. Without warning, my head pulls back and my hands freeze, a bright white light flashing in front of my eyes before I could blink twice. My neck seems to snap from the force that is. I am lost—somewhere in a cold acre full of ice and snow, so much snow that I struggle to keep my legs steady.

"And you never got over being shy even when you transformed?" She shook her head. "It's part of the reasons I couldn't take to you at first." Who would have thought? A century old vampire who should be more worldly wise than any other person in the world is actually a shy girl. Without warning I swung her into my arms. She gasped holding me tightly. "Shawn!" She whispered fiercely looking around the empty hall. I can't guarantee that these nosy supernaturals aren't poking their noses in our business where they don't belong but I don't care. I got the girl of my dreams, you think I'll let anyone get in the way of that?

Chase I saw her start to fall and my only instinct was to make sure she didn’t get hurt, so I reached out with both arms to stop her and held her along the length of my body, my arms tightening for the briefest of moments. Need for her slammed through me the second I felt her body against mine. I knew she could feel it too; her sharp intake of breath, the way she looked into my eyes, pupils dilating as if she had just been taken over by something she couldn’t control, her taut nipples against my chest that had my lycan clawing to get through. And her flushed face, lips that were parted as if ready for mine to take them.

Her heart pounding madly, she began to decode it all. It began to dawn on her that this was not meant to be an entire book. It was meant to be one word per page, meant to spell out but a few sentences. A key. A code. A message, for the initiated. Meant only for the one who knew how to look. Caitlin checked off the words as she turned page after page, and she remembered them, and in her mind, sentences began to form: The last vampire will arise after 2,000 years have passed. She will rise across the ocean and will be named for the color of blood. To enter the city, one needs a key. And the key can only be found here.

The circle flared black and violet, twisting, alive. From the darkness, a whisper rose: Nex umbraa, kai vel’thra… ix shael. Kai’thai kharuun… kai’thra kai’thai. From shadow, I awaken… I am hers. I am warrior… I am and I become. Then it appeared. Not a simple crow, but something older, warped. Its wings were tattered starlight. Its eyes burned like molten amethyst. It landed on her shoulder. Claiming her. Marking her.

I should not feel aroused in this moment but having Ashton hold and touch me like this in a desperate attempt to keep me hidden from the creatures did something to my insides. His breath was ragged against my ear. "Come on, come on," he mutters, more prayer than command. The scent transfer should have been enough. In any normal hunt, it would have been. But the Lustfangs weren't normal. They weren't like the others; whatever the Soul Keepers had pumped into their veins had burned out everything except appetite for sex. "Fuck," he growled, the word breaking like glass. That was when I saw the first one.

Maybe, just maybe, her destiny was only beginning. Outside, unseen and silent, shadows moved in the distance. Eyes glimmered, scanning the horizon.
