If sunrise ever had a scent, I would say it was Valentina’s. I flipped through the pages of her notes and inhaled the scent of each page, I wanted Valentina’s scent burnt to my brain. I was looking for more notes when a book toppled and fell out of her bag, landing on my chest. The book was titled “Valentine’s Day.” By “Guillotine” I have seen her clinging unto this particular book before, she went everywhere and anywhere with it. It was probably one of the contemporary romance books with a weak-ass female lead, a plot lacking storyline, and thousands of sex scenes, yet she seemed to cherish this one book.

On Valentine’s Day, Ethan Scott had a last-minute social engagement and left me home alone. Late at night, I received a message from him, telling me to meet him at a bar. Thinking he had finally remembered me, I rushed out the door, eager to see him. But when I came to the door of the private lounge, the scene before me froze me in place. The huntress nodded back coldly. "Suit yourself," she said. The keen piercing blue eyes burned into mine, but Vale didn't show any sign that divulged her change in moods, yet I knew by her pulsating heart. Despite it, I turned to Lyra and overly expressed my affection towards the former slave by pulling her in for a kiss on the mouth. A gasp sounded from Lyra's throat. When I turned back again, Valerina was already tramping down the hallway. Her long velvet red cloak flew like scarlet waves as she stormed off. The other hunters were trailing after her. When they were gone, I released Lyra from my hold and turned towards the door with an inward twinge in my chest.

I can do nothing but turn around and walk away before I shatter into pieces. What was supposed to be a reunion between us turned into something I never thought would happen; he’s supposed to be invincible, but I led the hunters right to him.

Paused at the door. “Stand with me,” she said. “Or get out of the way. I won’t be leashed.” A beat. He followed. The warehouse district stank of rust and old violence under the sodium glare. They arrived silent. No fanfare. Valentine stepped into the open. The hunters melted out of the shadows. Eyes gleaming with inherited arrogance. Confidence built on centuries of unchallenged kills. One moved forward. “You’re out of line.” “This city has no lines anymore.”
