This time it was placed in a far flung corner of the library. It must’ve been fate because I managed to find it. However, it doesn’t seem to be doing much. I’ve been sitting here for an hour and nothing has changed. The book details the nature of shifting. A complex history and how it translates into modern times now that we coexist with humans. The later chapters detail the biology behind it and how someone can shift properly. There have been cases of teens not being able to shift. It’s nothing new. Some hormonal imbalance that sorts itself out. Unfortunately, I’m old enough for my body to figure it all out but it hasn’t.

"Let's say I'm some sort of shape shifter.” she said, shrugging her shoulders like it wasn't a big deal. Shape shifter? That was crazy. “You… I didn't know that.” I mumbled, almost to myself. She turned to me. “I also was the soldier from Alexa's army who hid the book,” she said. “So Alexa wouldn’t burn it. I changed forms, buried it deep in the old lands and set the wards around it. I was watching the whole time.”

I responded, throwing the sleeves of my robe over my arm as the pain still crossed my mind. “I am glad that you are fine but I wanted to speak to you about the shapeshifter that tried to kill you” he started. “Shapeshifter? I thought those were far tales” it made no sense, those were creatures I had seen the library have information on like dragons and dwarves, they weren’t meant to be still thriving. “How was it discovered?” I inquired “I mean, how did you know that it was indeed a shapeshifter?” I asked again.

He bled from his side where one claw had cut through. Still, he didn't falter. Not once. Every time I weakened, his fire shielded me. Every time his storms buckled, my ember cut through for him. Until only one shadow remained. It towered over the clearing, larger than the rest, its shape shifting between wolf and human and something monstrous in between. Its core pulsed blinding white, chains wrapped thick around it. Kieran hissed between his teeth. "That one's old. Strong." The shadow bent its head toward me. A voice rumbled through the clearing, deeper than the others, layered with grief.

I cannot let my sensitive ego be punctured at a sharp but accurate comment. “Then, you’ll need to learn to bend the shadows until you can shape them around you, using the void as a way to augment your skills as a universal dragon to take on not just other dragon abilities, but their bodies and mannerisms as well. You need to become a true shapeshifter, without losing who you are to the transformation.”
