Deep within the folds of existence, far from the mortal plane and even the watchful gaze of Olympus, the ruins of the Shadow Realm quivered in a broken silence. Once a fortress of impenetrable darkness and sprawling chaos, the realm now resembled a battlefield that had been swallowed by its own defeat. Great black spires, once proud and menacing, lay shattered in heaps of ash and crumbling stone. Rivers of smoke oozed across the cracked and broken ground, slithering through the rubble like dying serpents. The very air itself tasted of bitterness and failure, thick with a heavy stench of burning magic and decayed hope.

My cloud was broken when a strong, smooth voice commanded, "Stop!" My eyes flit open and my heart stutters. My God, did I mess up? London stares at the both of us, an unreadable expression on his face. I messed up, didn't I? "What's the matter?" Jackie sasses, a brow raised in his direction. "I don't need to hear anymore," he replied with a shrug, "You both made the cut." "That means?" I ask unsurely, narrowing my eyes. It means you're both in," he answered with a small smile, "Welcome to Crash Course Rebellion."

A computer sat in the corner of the desk and there was a bookshelf along the adjacent wall. It would have given off a professional vibe if not for how trashed it was. Papers were scattered and torn all over the surface and floor, making the floor look white and black, hiding the dark carpet underneath. The computer monitor was shattered and laying uselessly on its side with the mouse and keyboard completely yanked off and thrown over to the other side of the room. The books on the shelves joined the papers on the ground. The different colored covers set off a contrast to the overwhelming black and white, but left the shelves looking dull and empty with the bare wood exposed.

The title was simple. The Shadow Races. She sank into one of the leather chairs by the window and began to read. Vampires. Werewolves. Shifters. The pages laid them all out with a stark clarity that erased any doubt, these weren’t mere stories whispered in shadows or legends spun to frighten children. The book presented them as integral threads woven into the fabric of the natural order. Detailed histories unfolded beneath her fingertips, chronicling centuries of conflict and fragile truces, ancient wars that reshaped territories, alliances forged in desperation, and betrayals that still echoed in the present day.

Different shifter breeds usually stay away from each other as each kingdom has its own set of laws. This is how it has been since the demise of the human race 250 years ago. Once humans had all but become extinct due to disease and their bodies' weaknesses, the shifters took over, splitting the realm into what used to be 6 kingdoms. Now only 4 remained and were separated, no longer working together under one rule but divided. The humans, although depleted in numbers, still managed to survive and live in their own territories but were ruled by whichever kingdom they lived in. Some lived outside of kingdoms in Boroughs and small towns.

Kyra turns to the last page of the book and rips out all of the pages and my eyes widen in shock. "What did you do that for?" I question. "My father wrote that story with the three of us. Little did we know at the time that he was preparing the three of us to one day rule over all of the realms. The realms were our test. To see how each of us did with the little power he gave us and I'm sure he was disheartened when Rizor failed. He wanted one of us to rule over all three realms in the end," she says while tearing more of the book revealing another open book that was hidden beneath those pages.

I checked the backseat to make sure I grabbed my gym bag, and headed out of the human city and into the pack lands. The drive was always peaceful, the dessert turning into mountains with an expansive wildlife. My father somehow convinced a High Priestess to create barriers, no one unless they were members of the alpha pack could enter, and if they tried they would burn from the inside out before there was nothing left. I’d seen it happen once, a lone wolf was unaware he was about to step into our territory, by the time we heard the screams, it was too late. My father was extraordinarily pleased that the barriers worked, and not at all worried about the loss of a life over a mistake.
