That was the only way I was going to survive this new reality. There was this library outside of campus that offered me hundreds of books to mull over for hours. I would have used the library on campus, but everyone in the library already knew me. How was I going to explain my new fascination with the mystical without looking weird? Looking weird wasn’t really my problem , but I really did not need prying or familiar eyes. And so, It was two in the afternoon, I was in an unfamiliar library and I reached for my third book of the day.

I got to the library and the librarian didn't even reply to my greetings. She just waved her hand. I took a corner in the farthest spot and began to read. I still didn't want anyone else to see me because there were still a lot more people, other than Logan, that bullied and detested me for being an Omega, a crime I never thought one could be guilty of.

Lucy's determination radiated through the air, tangible and electric. Her fingers danced delicately across the library shelves, her gaze like an arrow seeking its elusive target. Book after book blurred in her relentless pursuit, her eyes darting from one weathered spine to another. I stood beside her, captivated by her unwavering resolve, feeling the tendrils of curiosity tightening their grip on my own consciousness.

Melinda's and Kieran's sharp, piercing eyes, scanned the endless rows of books. Zora led them around the library, pointing out the different sections and genres. There were books on philosophy, science, art, and history, each one meticulously cataloged and arranged on the shelves. The titles were written in elegant calligraphy, and the bindings were richly adorned with gold leaf and embossed lettering. Kieran and Melinda were overwhelmed by the sheer size of the collection, and they couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer amount of knowledge that was contained within these walls.

She listened attentively, blocked everything that seemed to be in the world out. The librarian packed the last books back on the shelf, as he was about to turn off the lights. He saw some shadows at a corner and heard some mutterings. He wrinkled his eyebrows and walked over there cautiously. He stopped as he saw two students who were deeply immersed in what they were doing- studying. He cleared his throat to gain their attention. The both of them looked up instantly that he almost jerked back in fear.

I lecture myself as I bang my head on the table a few more times for a good measure. Someone clears her throat. I look up to see Mrs. McBee, our stern librarian glaring at me suspiciously from over the top of her half-moon-shaped reading glasses. I must be looking super crazy. I think she’s thinking that I’m a very unstable and untrustworthy person to be around her precious books right now.

About what I was becoming. I turned and began walking deeper into the library. The librarian was at the far desk near the eastern shelves, arranging a stack of old returns with the deliberate care of someone who had spent too many years around fragile things to ever move roughly again. She was older, thin, with silver at her temples and sharp eyes that missed less than people probably liked. I had seen her before over the years, though mostly from a distance. Not many girls like me had reason to linger in libraries where knowledge belonged more easily to children expected to inherit something.

A portal into a world I’d only ever read about in books. Now, I found excuses and gaps in my timetable to sneak in here. The only place where the whispers and the glares stopped, where I could just shut my brain off in peace. “Hale!” The librarian’s voice made me jolt. “You need to leave.” She was an older lady with greying hair and large spectacles that magnified her hawk like eyes. She reminded me of the librarian from Monsters University. “Yes,” I said quickly, scooping the thick history textbook in my arms. “I’m leaving. Just putting this back.”

He stared down at it, then at me, shock flickering across his features before the fight dragged his focus back to the next threat. “NEW FUNCTION DETECTED,” the librarian snarled, voice crackling. “CORRUPTED AUTHOR. ILLEGAL EDIT.” A volley of books arced toward us. I didn’t have time to parse titles. Burn, I thought, flinging the idea like a shield. Flame licked the edges of a chunk of them mid‑flight.

Drawing in a deep breath, I pushed the double door, letting the smell of old books hit my nose. This, the reality that I wished could be my own reality. "Miss Blake, I thought I wasn't going to see you again until the end of the session." The librarian greeted. We'd become friends or acquitance when she had found me at the end of the hall, bawling my eyes out while holding a book that I needed to study for my exams. She had made jokes of how she was going to charge me for soiling the book with my tears and mascara but at the end of the day, I never got charged for it.
