POV: Harper It almost looks like I was staring at a mirror. It feels like I was staring at a complete replica of me, but with a different face. It’s as if God created a different version of me and made a slight change in the face to show the difference. I leaned forward, captivated, as I read her words on a post she made just recently, “I believe kindness is the best gift we can give to one another,” she wrote. I felt my heart swell with excitement. Could this girl be the one? A kindred spirit for Liam, the missing piece that would make him whole again, someone who would cherish him and lift him up?

Susie's face went ghostly white when she saw Chester, her heart aching as if it were bleeding. Chester was a mess, tears streaming down his face as he cried in her arms, making her heart shatter into a million pieces. With a voice choked by tears, Chester stammered, "Susie, I was so scared. I thought... I thought I'd never see you again." Susie, ever the comforter, wrapped her arms around him and whispered soothingly, "Chester, I'm so sorry you were scared. However, I promise to always be here, right by your side. You won't lose me, ever."

A little girl proudly showed her mother a drawing she'd made. The drawing appeared to be a purple cat wearing a crown. The mother reacted as though she'd been handed a masterpiece. Ama smiled. The child beamed. And for a moment, the entire world seemed brighter. Not because anything extraordinary had happened. Because kindness had. The realization followed her the rest of the way home. That evening, the group gathered for dinner. Not because they had planned it. Because someone had suggested it. And everyone else had said yes. The meal wasn't memorable.

I smiled to myself as I headed for the bus stop. One small kindness at a time. That was how things started to change.

Her fingers fidgeted slightly against the sheets, and after a few moments, she shifted onto her side to face me. "Lucas," she murmured, her voice soft in the quiet space. "Hmm?" I responded, watching her closely. She hesitated, biting her lip before speaking. "Do you think... it's possible to be kind without being weak?" The question caught me off guard. I sat up slightly, propping my arm against the pillow. "Of course. Kindness and weakness aren't the same thing." "But a lot of people act like they are," she said, her gaze distant. "Like if you forgive too much, or if you give people too many chances, you're just setting yourself up to be hurt."

She looked at me and smile and said, “They can’t remember you, they didn’t even know you,” She said while chewing the pancake and she took a sip on her espresso. “That is what real kindness is… you help… even no one knows it, even no one will remember the help that you gave,” She said while eating the strawberry pancake that she ordered.

I suddenly feel drained, and a good night’s sleep would do wonders. I pondered what Ahmya’s last words to me were and wondered what she could mean by them. How can kindness possibly be someone’s doom? I have never received kindness before moving here, so if I want to show people kindness, then I will. I won’t rule with fear, that’s for certain.

Johnson hand found hers and squeezed. Later, in the elevator heading down to the hospital’s small outdoor courtyard, Chelle squeezed Daisy’s fingers and murmured, “Dinner, yeah? My treat.” Chelle’s voice always had a party in it, even when she was offering to pick up the tab. Daisy felt a soft, humbling gratitude for being pulled along by people who loved her so unassumingly, whose priorities seemed to be to make the evening not just a footnote but a memory.

CARA “Somehow I love putting Liam on his toes. You can call me weird, I don’t mind. I understand that he is simply asking for a harmless outing to make up for how he previously treated me, to make things right, and to make the few remaining moments we have together special.
