You can do it. You're strong. I see it in you, honest to God I do," I whispered gently, a slight tremor in my voice which I couldn't suppress. He reluctantly held my hand. "Come on please, all will be okay soon." My blackmailing methods hadn't taken me anywhere, but a few words of kindness did.

I said. He turned off the sound on the TV, giving me his full attention. "For what?” "For saving me. For bringing me here." The words came out quickly, shaky and heartfelt. "You're the only real person I have in my life right now.” His face softened, a quick flash of something more showed in his eyes; maybe it was empathy, or perhaps the weight of his own secret struggles. "Kindness doesn't cost anything. It's just something you do for someone who needs it."

"Speaking up for someone who probably doesn't deserve it. Not many people like you are left in this world." A small smile appeared on my lips. "But I also don't want anyone taking advantage of your kindness," he continued. "No one is," I replied. "Choosing kindness doesn't make us weak. If anything, it makes us a better version of ourselves." His expression softened just a little as he looked at me. I slowly lifted my hands to his face and gently cupped his cheeks, my thumbs brushing against his neatly trimmed beard. "I don't want you becoming someone who punishes innocent people just because they happened to make a mistake," I said softly.
