Chapter 190 FAKE BIANCA The bedroom had the specific quality of a space that two people had inhabited together and that had not yet fully adjusted to being a space for one of them — the wardrobe had her clothes on one side and his on the other, with a precision that looked like something that had developed over time rather than been imposed. There was a book on the nightstand on her side that had been set down face-down to mark a page, which I had not touched because moving it would change the page and the real woman would not have lost her place.

Then goodnight. Selene sat on the couch after Camille hung up. The book was on the hall table. Dark blue. Small. Closed. Sitting right there where it had been since Friday night. She had thought about the corner all weekend and she had thought about the terms and she had thought about the specific thing he had done, offering instead of asking, defining instead of waiting to be told, and she had walked past the book on Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening and Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon and she had not opened it because she had needed the corner to land fully before she let anything else arrive.

And yet the last light of the evening fell through. Golden. Warm. Almost alive. There were three beds in the room. Little. Ordinary. Despite the decades. A closet. A table. A shelf full of books. All covered with dust. And yet nothing was left. Not really. It's safe. Like someone was looking after it. “Look at this.” Elio already knelt beside the shelf. The books were old. Very old. Fairy tales. Kidneys. School books. Character blocks. And there was a little notebook in between.

But tonight, that was exactly where she was going. The library was two stories of decadence and secrets. Velvet drapes, golden sconces, and hundreds of books—most unread, but a few with spines cracked like they’d been opened recently. She moved to the tall shelf Max had mentioned. “Behind the Steinbeck collection,” he’d said. “Push the blue one. East of Eden.”

The soft groan of wood rang out in the quiet bookstore as Lena turned over the last sign on the door: **CLOSED**. Outside, the city drew a breath, illuminated by amber streetlights and the quiet rumble of passing cars. Within, the world held its breath. Warm. Intimate. Holy.

Sidia attempted to shove down the bubbling desire in her chest. The temptation to give in to her circumstances made her ache as she looked over the massive collection of books. The room itself was impressive as well. Nooks carved into the walls overflowed with cushions, a soft light with no discernible source made reading pleasant, and old tables stocked with parchment and ink made excellent study desks. This place was any scholar's dream, and a lump formed in Sidia's throat. She was overcome with emotion, not just from the war inside her mind but also from the sheer wonder of such a place.
