Kayla Turi POV “Is everyone in this damn book insane?!” I slammed the four-hundred-page book onto the floor. The thud echoed in my tiny apartment, making the glass of water on my desk tremble. I stomped toward the dispenser, filled my cup, and hissed, “Aaaah!” as the hot water stung my index finger. I blew on it furiously. “Don’t tell me her bad luck is rubbing off on me now?” I just couldn’t wrap my head around how an author could enjoy torturing her main character with an army of side characters who lived only to crush her.

I pressed lightly against one of the books. Nothing. I tried another. Still nothing. “Maybe it’s not the books,” Jacob said. “Then what?” He leaned closer, examining the wood itself. “Back panel,” he murmured. I blinked. “What?” “Sometimes compartments aren’t in the books,” he said. “They’re behind them.” My heart started pounding faster. “Help me,” I said. We began pulling books out carefully. One by one. Stacking them on the floor. The shelf slowly emptied. My hands moved faster now.

Colin comes in, a wave of surprise hits me, but before I can say anything, Shawn follows him in. “You're here already, Eva.” Colin said, acknowledging me, a wide smile on his lips. “Not too long ago.” I replied, returning the smile. I sneak a glance at Shawn. He watched me like a hawk. Like he knew what I'd been doing. My eyes slowly stray to the big book, just to be sure I had actually closed it. The golden back rested heavily on the rest of the book, “The Codex Luporum” deeply engraved on it, you could pour water in it, and it'll sit comfortably.

"I won't watch you destroy it. This Soul-Calming Pill will leave your senses intact, but it will take away your ability to move or speak. When you finally correct yourself, you can come back. As long as you are willing to change, you will still be my sister." I stared at him in fury. Where did he plan to send me? The door opened. Roxanne, Caelum, Henry, and Lucius stood outside. "Roxy has built a convent over the past four years. It is meant to cultivate the mind. Even the most depraved people emerge reborn. Go there and reflect. Death cannot erase sin. If you did wrong, you deserve punishment." Caelum sounded exhausted, almost helpless. I wanted to shake my head. My neck refused to respond.

Turning the knob, I quietly peeked. If it wasn't because of the sunlight coming from the window, I wouldn't be walking inside. My eyes wandered around the room, as they landed on the bookshelves. I remember Anson and Mr Grayson are owners of a publishing company. No wonder why Luca's office is filled with books. I smiled at the cleanliness of the room, as I walked towards the desk with papers perfectly placed above it. My eyes suddenly landed on a picture frame, but it doesn't have a picture. Instead, a note was placed inside of it.

She felt like she was a kept woman! While being lost in her own thoughts, she didn't notice that Lisa pushed the book that was placed in the table towards her. "Speaking about this book, I've got this for you since you don't have anything to do anyways. It's a book about making pills. You should give it a try." Lisa said. Naomi looked at the book that was pushed towards her. The cover wasn't that ugly nor fancy as it looked quite ordinary. The cover had some words written on it which were "The First Steps of Becoming a Mage" which should be the book's title. The book was somehow thick.
