Chapter 6: The Weight of Silence The car moved steadily through the quiet night. The city lights glared past the windows. The roads were less crowded now, the noise of the conference long left behind. Inside the car, the silence felt heavy. Marcus sat on the driver's seat. His hands rested firmly on the steering wheel, his posture straight, eyes fixed on the road ahead. He had learned over the years when to speak and when not to. In the back seat, Lucas sat slightly turned to the side.

Everything stops! Silence.

Althea asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Silence," Mrs. Ruiz replied, her tone resolute. "Your silence is the most powerful weapon you have in this situation." Althea looked at her mother, her brow furrowed. "But how can I just stay silent, when they've done all of this?" she asked, her voice full of confusion and doubt. "Because a silent woman is a deadly woman," Mrs. Ruiz said. "Silence is golden, as they say," Mrs. Sobrerano said, a knowing look in her eyes. "A well-timed silence can say more than any words ever could."

The softness that showed up out of nowhere, the warmth that curled itself just enough around his words to make you second guess the cold you knew. He waited. When he realized I still wasn’t going to talk, he gave a slow, almost imperceptible nod. “Anyway, I can see that you are not even ready to talk now and so I need you to calm your nerves. So, I will be leaving you till you finally see reasons to do that.” Responding to him might worsen the whole situation. But strangely, my silence wasn’t really getting him pissed. Right now, I have come to understand now that ‘silence is golden’ in another dimension.

“I want you!” Silence crashed down. Heavy, Absolute. Even the wind outside seemed to fade. For one brief, impossible moment, Everything stopped. Then The monitors dimmed. The golden light faded to a faint, fragile pulse. And Samuel’s voice returned. Soft. Almost human. I don’t know how.”

This is bad, I sigh inwardly as I feel myself tighten. “Did we die?” She returns to her seat, her eyes still closed and I chuckle. “You’re not getting away from me that easy missy.” I say, smiling as I ruffle her hair and the silence returns. From the first time we met, silence seems to be her comfort. Maybe getting involved was the best decision I’ve made in my life after all. Smiling to myself I take her hand again and we drive in the warmth of the stillness that envelopes us, before we reach our destination.

"Can you stop? You're making my head spin!" Celestine, who had been pacing back and forth, fell silent and looked at Lilyana with annoyance. "Lily, come on! You're telling me to stop thinking? While you just relax," Celestine grumbled. "You're so cruel. Don't you respect my heartbreak? I just got cheated on, Cele! And turn off that annoying phone of yours, it keeps ringing!" Celestine snorted. She then slammed the tab in her hand onto the bed Lilyana was sitting on.
