Instead of exposing the lie. I found myself saying nothing at all.

Expressing her excitement about Friday. All lies, of course. But that was fine. I’d been lying too. Two liars circling each other. But I held all the cards. I always win in the end. Always.

Ashley teased, pointing at Garnet. Garnet simply smiled, while John cleared his throat awkwardly. "Okay… maybe this year," he said hesitantly. Garnet turned to look at him, eyes wide with surprise. He had no choice. He had to lie. "That’s settled then! I’ll call Esmeralda later—I have good news for her!" Diana said excitedly. Then, the unexpected happened. "I don’t want to get pregnant." The room fell into silence. All three of them turned to look at Garnet.

I ran my hand along the wall, the dresser, the bedpost, just to make sure it was all real. When everyone went to bed, Emily stayed behind with me in the living room. We sat in silence for a while, just listening to the ticking clock. “You know,” she said quietly, “you’re stronger than you think.” I smiled faintly. “Maybe. Or maybe I just got tired of being broken.” She looked at me, her eyes warm. “Either way, you made it.” Deep down, something still lingered. A faint unease I couldn’t name, it felt like I was living a lie and I'd still go back to that hole. The deep scar in my chest throbbed, I held my chest tightly.

It is easy for Bradley to be honest, it is difficult for him to lie. Years ago, he would have easily said that it was impossible for him to lie, as he found it limiting in the way that he could handle the future. Lying almost always led to more lying. Of course, at the time he was eleven years old and did not understand the concept of sexuality or love, and to some extent he still does not.

But something about his words, the sincerity in his voice, made her answer. "Rory, please listen," Julian said, his voice laced with desperation. "I know I lied to you, and I'm so sorry. But I had to. My past... it's complicated. I've made mistakes, and I've been hurt. I built a new identity to protect myself, to start fresh."
