I tried to forget about the champagne I was just starting to enjoy before she walked in here. She returns with the wine and a glass which I guess she was going to used, before she finally had her seat. "Here is the wine," she smiled, and I told her to go ahead and opened it, which she did with a smile plastered on her face. She poured wine into the two glasses, and handed mine over to me, before taking hers. "So were you able to see your sister?" I asked her, as I finally took a sip from my wine, and dropped it back on the table.

She was carrying a glass of dark red wine. “Sister!” she called out cheerfully when she reached us. “How wonderful to see you socializing with others.” The table fell quiet. Everyone turned to look at her, then at me. I could see the curiosity in their eyes. They knew there was some kind of drama between us. “Elara,” I said carefully. “I hope you don’t mind me interrupting,” she said to the table with a brilliant smile. “I just wanted to greet my dear sister.” She leaned down to give me a kiss on the cheek, but as she did, her hand holding the wine glass tilted just slightly.

I stood up, and and separated the wine glasses, explaining each to her. "There's the Cabarnet, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Zinfandel, Pinot noir, Rose, Chardonnay, Viognier, Sparkling,sweet wine, vintage, rose white,port, Sherry, Balloon, Flute, Stemless and Aerating." I said the words over and over and made her say it too. "Most people have just one or two sets of wine glasses but for someone of a high social class, it's important that you knew all of them and their various uses."

The kind of tension only family can cause. “My goodness,” Vivienne exclaims, running her fingers along the etched stem of her wine glass. “Is this real crystal? It must be. So clear. So refined. Those two have a way of winding up the boys until a fight breaks out. I hear the click of heels on the floor as I look over my shoulder at where the patio doors are. Kara, my twin sister, emerges from the house, her long dark wavy hair flowing behind her. Her green eyes sparking as she sees my face light up with what she carries in her hands: two large glasses of rose wine. Our favourite. “I thought you might want this,” she smiles as I take it. We clink glasses before she slumps down beside me on the lounge chair, “Here’s to us another year older,” she smiles and we take a sip. It’s fruity and delicious and perfect for a sunny day like this.

Selena did not move. The person next to her could not help but laugh. “You’re asking Mrs. Ferguson to drink, but you filled your glass with pomegranate juice? You’re bullying her, huh?” Jade was slightly taken aback. Only then did she realize that the glass she was holding was diamond-shaped, while the other wine glasses were common. I reached the edge of the ballroom, where I found a table glittering with crystal glasses of wine, deep and dark as spilled rubies. Slowly, I picked up one of them, careful not to break the rest. The glass felt cool and delicate against my fingers. I took the first sip, and my eyes widened from the taste. It was rich and sharp against my tastebuds, as though it was something rare and perfect.
