Adored anything that screamed girly. Farren's door was open when I approached with the cart. From here I could see her tousled hair on her pillow. Pillows were strewn about the room. She was barely covered by her blanket. Her nightdress rode up to her waist. The girl wasn't the best of sleepers. I had woken up on more than one occasion to hear her mumbling in her sleep. Thrashing about to try and find a more comfortable position.

I can see her eyes moving beneath her eyelids; nightmare. Last night she kept on crying out, sitting up quickly in freight after the incident with shifting and crashing into the wall. But now her limbs tremble and a very small and quiet whimper escapes her lips in a breath. "You should take her upstairs and get Dwayne to give her something for the nightmares. I could hear her screaming" Dad says, leaning towards me from his big chair. I notice the looks he, Clyde and David give her. She might as well be a part of the family with how much they all care for her. I nod and turn to pick her up, slipping my arm under her legs. I don't get very far.

He just didn't want to see it. Now, on the forty-first night, the nightmare is worse than ever. His face is turning pale. His lips are blue. In his dream, he is drowning. I can feel it—the terror radiating from his small body like heat from a furnace. His heartbeat is a drum. His breath is a thread about to snap. I want to help him. I want to wake him up. I want to flip him over. But the blanket is pulled tight. And the rule is absolute.

The next second, a white flash nuked my vision and forced my eyes shut. When I opened them again, my living room had straight-up rage quit and turned into a blood-red wasteland. "Okay, what the hell?" I squinted and spotted my six-foot-two husband, Adrian Chase, already doing the whole protective-dad thing with one arm around our son.

"Fiona, Xavier is dead. He’s been dead for five years! Haven't you had enough? You had him wrongfully imprisoned, and he died in there. What else do you want now?!" Fiona stared at my portrait for a long time before speaking coldly, "Xavier loves his little tricks. Tell him to come see me within three days. If he doesn’t, he’ll face the consequences." My body trembled as I lay curled in the old trunk beneath the back staircase, surrounded by moth-eaten tablecloths.

"I swear, my little one, no one will take you from me. No one." The night was heavy, as if the very air was made of lead. My dreams were haunted by images of Valentim tearing my baby from my arms and the face of Xavier, injured and humiliated. I moaned in my sleep, trapped in this never-ending nightmare, until an abrupt noise outside woke me up.

She was never going to surrender to him; he bought her, but he couldn't buy her life. She was going to make sure she made his life a living nightmare. She was going to make him regret ever buying her and let her go. Yes, he was going to release her himself when he got tired of her. She grinned; he didn't know what he bought. He had just purchased a nightmare, and that nightmare was hers.

Ivette was jarred awake by the incessant screeching of a child. She thought she might have been dreaming but something pulled painfully at her hair and her eyes snapped open to see startling eyes of amber, peering up at her with wonder. The child blinked. Ivette blinked too. The child blinked again, twice.
