Second Chances
I look down at my plate and realize that in trying to separate it out from the other vegetables, I’ve made a pile on my plate.
“I’ll eat it,” I say, the thought making me want to gag. I hate squash.
“What don’t you like about it?” he asks me.
I look at him, then back at my plate.
“It’s slimy, don’t you think, Ayda?” Cathal asks. I look at his plate and see that he too has his squash off to the side. I smile at him.
“It’s gross. Slimy on the inside and has all those seeds,” I say, shivering in disgust.
