Addy nodded and pointed to her sandals, saying, “Same.” Shea and Adam led the way around the edge of the large room. They headed toward a group of tables at the back. The tables were standing room only, and there was only one open table. The six of them gathered around it. Addy looked around in dismay and yelled out, “There’s not much room to put our purses.” Shea laughed and said, “The table is plenty big enough to hold everything.” Addy looked down at the small table they’d crowded around and looked doubtful as she put her purse on it.

“Be careful on those steps. And try not to get your fingers all over everything. The oils from your skin will ruin my books.” I nodded. “I’ll be careful,” I replied. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and switched on the flashlight, then descended down the stairs. With each step, the air became colder. By the time I got to the bottom, it was almost frigid. I found myself in a surprisingly small room, but it was still packed with books. The walls were made of bookshelves, and there were a few glass cases that housed extremely decrepit old tomes. Unlike upstairs, everything seemed to be neatly organized.

The bookstore was the kind that looked small from the outside and kept going. A narrow door between a dry cleaner and a wine bar, no sign except the word MARGINS in small brass letters above the frame. Inside it opened up — two rooms, then a third, connected by doorways that felt accidental, like the books had simply claimed more space over time and the building had accommodated them out of respect. Chapter 23: Almost The kitchen was small in the morning. It had never been small before. The penthouse was enormous by any reasonable measure, floor to ceiling windows, marble everywhere, the kind of space that was designed to make people feel the weight of what it cost. Liora had never once described it as small. This morning it was small. She was at the counter waiting for the coffee and he came in from the bedroom already dressed, dark trousers, shirt not yet buttoned at the collar, and the kitchen immediately lost approximately forty percent of its available space.

Applying it to my everyday life is easy, because I am almost always the only person I let into my space. The coat hits the floor in a whisper as I let it go, then place one foot after the other, pushing further into my apartment. It is a tiny space above a bookstore, so it should take only a few minutes to cover every inch of it. I can smell the perfume, rich and strong, with every step I take. “Who is here?” I call, my heart thumping hard against my chest. “You better run away now while you have the chance. The cops are already on their way.”

It's a woman named Lisa who came in broken and left with books that helped. And three locations full of other Lisa moments I'll never know about." "That's not small." "It doesn't feel small. It feels—exact. Like the right size." She looked at him. "Does the club feel like that for you? Like you built the right size thing?"

"It's my space and I get to do whatever I want." "Off course , it's yours." She examined the space like she was mentally cataloging everything wrong with it. "Where's the personality? The color? Any evidence that an actual human lives here and not just a very organized ghost?" "Interior design isn't exactly a priority." "Clearly." She rose to her feet and moved to my bookshelf, which contains exactly twelve books, all business theory. "Okay, we need to fix this situation." She leaned on it with her arms crossed. "We can't keep living like this."

THOMAS The library has never felt smaller. Not physically, of course. This library could comfortably accommodate twenty people and still leave room to pace, but somehow the space seems to shrink around us that morning. The rest of the house recedes into irrelevance while Iris sits cross-legged on the sofa opposite me with a laptop balanced on her knees. Sketchbooks cover half the table. Two legal pads have vanished beneath fabric swatches she somehow produces from nowhere. Two cups of coffee sit abandoned and forgotten, growing steadily colder while sunlight and rain take turns claiming the windows behind us.

Homey. There were no glinting chandeliers or polished marble floors. The space was low-lit, warm, and masculine. A dark leather couch dominated the living room, draped with a fleece throw that looked like it had been dragged off a bed. A punching bag hung in the corner beside a dartboard riddled with holes. The kitchen was neat, almost suspiciously so—counters scrubbed clean, cabinets bare except for protein powder and three unopened bottles of whiskey. But it was the small details that threw me. A stack of books slumped against the wall—wolf history texts, leadership manuals, and, bizarrely, a slim volume of poetry wedged between them like a guilty secret.

His jaw is working, I'm sure he's running through arguments in his head, trying to decide which one to use. Finally he sighs, then tells me. Title, author, it's on the second shelf from the bottom, left side. I get my keys. "You don't have to do this," he says when I'm at the door. "I know." His apartment is small and neat. Really compact, there's literally no breathing space, I wonder how he manages to not get depressed in this kind of space, with his hectic work and all, coming back to this cardboard box apartment must be hell. The bookshelf is exactly where he said. I find the book in about twenty seconds.
