What used to be a dog—a creature that possessed the hollow, rotting eyes of a dead thing—is smiling.
It wasn’t a baring of teeth. It was an expression of pure, predatory amusement, its lips pulled back so far they tore at the corners of its mouth, revealing layers of glistening, raw muscle beneath. It held that smile, static and frozen, while its head twitched with insect-like precision.
"They're starting to wake up," the stranger noted, his voice devoid of emotion.
Inside the paddock, the silence broke. The sheep began to moan—a low, discordant sound that wasn't animalistic, but unmistakably human. The sound of a thousand people drowning at once.
