Under some semi-melting snow, the green grass buds showed up. That was the coldest period of time before the spring in the whole Snow Province. But everything had begun to recover. A group of seven-color deer demons were gnawing fresh-growing grass in the shallow grassland under the ice cliffs.

KATERINA THE SNOW FALLS around us in gentle specks. Lifting my hand, I try to catch a few. Most of the flakes dodge my hand. The ones that land bring a brief, sharp chill before melting into nothingness. "I think it'll stick this time," Ulyana notes. Brushing the flakes from my hair, I drag my foot through the grass, making little tracks of green before the white covers them again. Maybe I can make a snowman later. Even though X was dressed in a few layers it did nothing to hide his slender but muscular build.

Roric whispered, pointing at the snow beneath the litter. It wasn't red. It wasn't even the violet-tinged shade of the Lunar Pack. It was a shimmering, viscous silver, and where it hit the ice, the frozen ground didn't just melt; it crystallized. The snow transformed into sharp, geometric glass structures that hummed with a low, sub-harmonic frequency. They set up camp in the remains of an old mountain waypoint, sheltered from the wind by a collapsed stone arch. Elara knelt by Leo's side, her bandaged hands shaking as she pulled back the charred bits of his tunic.
