Alex’s POV The room smelled like bleach, the kind that burns your nose and makes your eyes sting. Not clean, not safe—just sharp, like it’s trying to scrub away something that won’t leave. She kept a bottle under the sink, said it kept the rot out. I didn’t know if she meant the tiles or me. I sat on the edge of the bathtub, my hands raw from scrubbing. Not because they were dirty. It was something else, something stuck under my skin, no matter how hard I tried to wash it away. The water was cold now, but I kept going.

I better be able to fall back to sleep or this day will suck big time. When my shower is complete, I pull my tampons from under the sink. As I prepare to slip back under the covers, I notice a large red spot in the center of the white sheet. Great. I pull off all the bedding to find both sheets stained. I make my way to the laundry room, stain treat each spot, place bleach in the washer, then start the load. I turn off the end-of-cycle-alert. Task done, I snag a quilt from the sofa before I tuck myself back into bed, pillow covering my eyes.
