Closing my eyes, Ethan just pulled me against him. “Here everyone comes!” Kyle sounded excited. He came from somewhere behind us, making Ethan and I come out of our bubble. “If we need to leave, let me know. Don’t push yourself.” Ethan whispered to me. There was a large group of people coming in with different coolers and chairs. “STAND BACK!” Travis’s voice came from behind us. A second later, there was a large boom and a huge fireball blew into the air. “WE HAVE FIRE!” “I see Travis lit the firepit.” I couldn’t help the giggle that escaped my lips.

“Impressive.” Owen and Cameron built a fire pit together. They cleared a space, collected rocks, and then placed them carefully in a circle, four high. They have three folding chairs positioned around it, and the marshmallows are front and center with three long toasting sticks ready. I throw down my window-cleaning rags and take a seat by the fire. Cameron’s face falls as he thinks. “Do we have any matches?” I raise my eyebrows. “Didn’t you think of that before you started building this?” I ask.

Gold would do to this, Gold wouldn't do that, Gold doesn't like this, Gold likes that. They kill a part of him even before he has the chance to try it. "But just like a phoenix, I am reborn again..." He rises from the ashes. The exact same thing people burn is where he'll come back. This time, stronger and better. This time, he rejects to care about what they think will suit him. We head outside followed by the dog. It’s a cooler night. There aren’t any clouds in the sky and the stars are shining brightly. Charles and I head to the back of the cottage. I have kindling and wood chopped in a pile. I add some kindling to the brick fire pit. Next, I add some large wood, light a match, and throw it inside. The fire catches quickly, and the wood begins to crackle. “Have you ever had a spider wiener?” I ask. “No, what’s that’s” he laughs.

"I'm ready." --- We built a fire in the garden. Not in the fireplace — in the fire pit, where we've roasted marshmallows with Sofia, where we've celebrated solstices and birthdays and the simple fact of being alive. Celeste carries the boxes from the attic. One by one, she opens them, reads a few lines from each letter, then places them in the flames. She doesn't cry. Just watch the paper curl and blacken and turn to ash. "You're letting go," I say.

But that can’t be right because this belongs to my mother and she’s a by the rule witch and would never experiment with this kind of stuff. “Come start me a fire you little pyro” he said breaking my concentration. “You’re right there is some weird stuff in here” I told him. “I know, light me a fire and I’ll show you the weirdest part I found.” He said. Tyler and I head to the fire pit. I throw some small branches and medium size logs into the fire pit and snap my fingers. The wood catches immediately. “That is freaking awesome” he clapped his hands together “You can finally come home!”

It hurt too much. In spring, the forest was particularly spectacular; blossoming wild hydrangeas lining the forest clearing, the grass soft and green, the scent of pine and dewy earth mixing with the fresh food being sold by various vendors at the market. Tonight, the center of the clearing would hold a bonfire to symbolize the burning away of the cold winter and the first sparks of spring. The large fire pit was already set up, piled high with kindling, logs, and even scrap wood. People would dance and drink and laugh until the sun came up in the morning.

Ella’s Point of View The mountain air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. The campfire crackled at the center of the campsite, casting dancing shadows over the tents pitched in a circle. Laughter echoed, mingling with the sound of beer cans being popped open and the clinking of marshmallows roasting on the flames. It was supposed to be a perfect moment, a relaxing weekend with friends, planned months ago.

This was a new beginning, a chance to leave behind the pain and betrayal of the past and embrace the promise of a brighter future. "I think you might be a closet pyro," Andy chuckled as he joined us, his eyes fixed on the mesmerizing sight of the flames devouring everything in their path. "I've always had a fascination with fire," I admitted, a small smile tugging at my lips. "I was just stopping by to update you on the pack. Everyone's settled in and currently enjoying their own fires in the fields. There are a few boars roasting over them too," Andy informed us. "Oh goddess, I completely forgot about the roast," I exclaimed, feeling a pang of guilt.
