Max's POV The flames in the firepit pop and jump, sparks drifting up to scatter among the stars. The night is alive with noise, laughter and the hum of conversation. Zahra is home. Her presence has pulled everyone together, strung a cord of energy through the group that feels almost like the old days, before everything broke apart.

Mom always knew exactly what every plant needed and when. The breeze blew again, this time taking some fallen leaves with it as it went. It was Autumn after all. Cara followed the leaves with her eyes as they blew across the back yard. Then she glanced over at the round brick fire pit in the center of the yard and smiled. There were many happy memories made around it over the years. Most of them envolved roasted hot dogs and s'mores and hot fires with hot cocoa or apple cider. This place, her home, was filled with so much love and good times.

I took another swig from my beer. “What, are you just gonna bump someone out of their appointment and give it to her?” “Damn right.” I grinned. Tobias grabbed the bottle of lighter fluid that always sat in the cupholder of his chair and squirted it over the sticks piled high in the firepit. Once he lit the sucker, a wide smile stretched across his face as he watched the flames dance. “You’re such a pyro.” I shook my head. “I’ve been called worse.” He doused the fire with a few more squirts, sending the flames higher. “So, what’s going on with Fane and her ex, that asshat Brooks?” he asked, making his way to his chair.

What Lothar wanted was to move particles around, causing the air above and around the fire pit to be saturated with oxygen, feeding the flames until . It was quite a sight really. Robbie wished he'd brought a camera. The air above the bit shimmered and glowed for a moment, and then a column of fire erupted out about ten yards from the pit and up to the sky. Flames engulfed all of the nearby golems and for a moment hid them from view. The towering constructs emerged from the flame, but their surfaces were cracked and scorched. "Now tear 'em apart!" Robbie shouted.

Raging and burning until there’s nothing left but ash. The boys and I dug this firepit years ago, seeking a place to hang out away from the ever-watchful eyes of our parents. We thought it was some clever fucking secret, but after coming home reeking of bonfire smoke, my dad figured out pretty quickly what we’d done. He didn’t take it away from us, though. Instead, he came out and helped us dig it deeper, drilling the rules of fire safety into our heads until he was satisfied we weren’t going to burn the damn forest down. From then on, it became our spot; our own little dominion right near the edge of our pack’s territory.

Bonus Chapter 17 – Cabin Getaway: Fireplace Worship (20-Year Anniversary Escape) Eli POV The cabin was buried deep in the Colorado pines no cell signal, no nearby lights, only snow-laden branches brushing the roof and the steady pop of the stone fireplace Dante had stoked to life the second we stepped through the door.

“Unless Yesande has taken up residence in the neighborhood, or unless she’s got someone closer to home keeping an eye on things, you’re going to have to purge the charmer thing, Leo.” Jasmine picked up one of the long sticks that speared the marinated meats and vegetables on the tray nearest her. She moved from the table to the bonfire Keilor had built in the fire pit. The fire was the only light in the darkened and deceptively unprotected garden. Fireflies danced and whizzed through the rare black night, but did nothing to illuminate the six people around the fire.

As the little bell on top of the door rang out a sweet tune, both Lani and Blake twisted around expecting another package but were instead faced with Jax' angered face. "Jax? What's wrong?" Lani asked. "The feds, they're here." "What?" Blake said with his face etched in confusion, "What'd they want now?" "They're here to snoop around, they know about the fire and they want to know what happened," Jax spoke in a bored tone. "What? The fire that happened nearly a month ago? I call bullshit," Blake laughed as he placed more paint in Lani's hair. She giggled shortly before returning her attention back to Jax, "He's right, there's nothing to investigate," Lani added.

Closing my eyes, Ethan just pulled me against him. “Here everyone comes!” Kyle sounded excited. He came from somewhere behind us, making Ethan and I come out of our bubble. “If we need to leave, let me know. Don’t push yourself.” Ethan whispered to me. There was a large group of people coming in with different coolers and chairs. “STAND BACK!” Travis’s voice came from behind us. A second later, there was a large boom and a huge fireball blew into the air. “WE HAVE FIRE!” “I see Travis lit the firepit.” I couldn’t help the giggle that escaped my lips.

I wrap my arms around myself, feeling a sudden shift in the air. The BBQ has room for all our mates to cook around currently they all have their shits off just in swimming trunks as they marinate the meat ready to put on the coals. The kids are running around playing kiss chase and nearly knocking over the chairs in the process. I just smile sitting on the lounge chairs where the fire pit is on the top level overlooking the chaos below. I just watch Violet link arms with Aria as they begin whispering and giggling to each other, making my stomach sink. Those two have a way of winding up the boys until a fight breaks out.
