My father may have been right about the answers to our creation lying within the pages of his books, but the depth of depravity has been more than a little diluted if what Aggie touched upon is true. “I think it won’t be as easy as Mrs Crook makes out. I have this…feeling… like Alcmene won’t give up so easily. She is really strong Zaine, I’m kinda scared to piss her off.” Sophia stops walking and looks up at me with her glistening brown eyes. The whites are pink and the tears on her lashes are dangerously close to spilling over. Seeing her so scared and vulnerable is a punch to the gut. I’m meant to have the answers. “Have fun!” Inside, the air was cool and quiet. Sophia wandered slowly, her fingers grazing spines of books that stretched endlessly. “Wow,” she whispered. “Nice.” She paused at a shelf, plucking out a nonfiction book. “Space. Why not?” she murmured, opening it. Then something caught her eye. A shadow. Movement. Someone standing just behind the shelf. Her breath hitched. The book slipped from her hand and hit the floor with a loud thud. Sophia froze. Her pulse roared in her ears. “Oh my God,” she whispered.

Chapter 4 The library was a sanctuary of mahogany and leather, lit only by the amber glow of a dying fire and a few strategically placed lamps. Sofia sat in a wingback chair, a book open on her lap, though she hadn't read a single word in an hour. She was wearing a sheer, emerald-green slip that clung to her skin, the thin straps barely holding the fabric up. She knew Lorenzo would be home soon. She could feel the shift in the house's energy, the way the staff moved with more urgency.

She glanced over with a friendly smile. “Hey,” she greeted quietly, leaning a little closer. “You’re in this class too, right? I think I saw you last week but didn’t get to say hi. I’m Sophia.” I offered a small smile back, grateful for the normal interaction. “Yeah, I’m Saraphina. Nice to meet you.” “Same,” she said, pulling out her notebook. “This class is kind of dense, huh? I’ve been trying to keep up with the readings but it feels like a lot. You finding it okay so far?”

Pups soon. I close my eyes, but sleep remains elusive. Behind my eyelids, I see Sophia, not as she was tonight, trembling with unwanted pleasure, but as she was in the library, fighting against a wolf twice her size with fierce determination. The memory of her breaking her attacker’s nose, the knowledge that she fought back rather than submitting immediately, stirs something like respect.

It was only six months after that I finally saw her again. “How are you, Miss Yen? It’s been a while.” “I think I have recovered some memories, doc. The men who raped me have faces already.” “Can you identify them?” “I’m not sure.” “I’ll show you some photos and tell me if you have seen some of them in your dreams.” “Okay, doc.” The doctor turned to her laptop and turned it towards me. She then clicked on a file, and photos of different men appeared. The first one I recognized was Josh Herra.

Sophia’s POV I could only notice the vivid scent of ink and old books in the library. I could seee shelves as high as they could possibly be above me. They were filled with books as old as the Moon Goddess. I put my hands on the rough surface of the wood, but my head still felt troubled and uncomfortable from all the events that had happened that day. I won. I proved myself. But still, something dawned on me, it was a whisper, a glimpse of unease, and it just wouldn't leave me alone. It wouldn't let me have the moment.
