Barrow exhaled slowly.
“That,” he admitted, “I do not understand.”
Elder Maelin shook her head.
“Phantom wolves,” she said, “when they manifest early, are usually described as a white mist, thin, cold, ghost-like. They do not glow like suns. They do not carry writing.”
Another elder, Elder Soren, thin, sharp-faced, stepped forward, hands clasped behind his back.
“It looked sealed,” he said suddenly.
The room turned toward him.
“A sealed wolf,” Soren continued, eyes narrowed as if replaying the scene. “It didn’t roam freely. It came out, struck, returned. Like it was restrained by something.”
